Over the course of eight months, my 4th grade class has come such a long way (all due to hands on learning and real life connections). It is an amazing feeling watching several Level 1 students have "ah-ha moments" and progress in ways they never thought were possible. With only two months left of school, my students are antsy and eager for summer vacation. To keep them motivated and engaged, we will spend the next two months launching an economics unit of study across various content areas. In Math, advanced students will become cashiers in which they are first responsible for hand written computation and will then utilize the requested cash registers to follow through with their customer purchase. The remainder of the class will "shop" at the market by picking out a few of the pretend items requested. Students will calculate their total purchase as well as the change they should receive. During the concluding weeks of school, students will become their very own business owners; launching their own store! Students will create a business plan and be in charge of selling their items; as well as keeping track of their profit. Not only will my current 4th graders benefit from these items, but future 4th graders will utilize these items to form real life math connections.
