  • A Pear-fect Pair: Virtual Learning and Pear Deck!

    Funded Dec 30, 2020

Thank you so much for donating to my classroom project. I had originally requested a subscription to "Pear Deck" in order to communicate simultaneously with my hybrid and remote students for class discussions. My school ended up purchasing a subscription for our entire school, so Donor's Choose allowed me to use the donations for new books for my classroom library.

While selecting books, I focused on books by and/or about BIPOC authors/characters. I have been focusing on diversifying my library for my 8th grade students. Paper books are such a luxury for my students now that they have spent so many hours on the screen. During asynchronous time each time my students do independent reading. These books have increased engagement and excitement in a year that had so many challenges.

Thank you for believing in me as a teacher in Chicago. My students can feel the support.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Hanlon

  • Chromebooks! Not boring Notebooks II!

    Funded Aug 23, 2018

First of all, thank you so much for valuing my teaching, classroom and most of all my students. In my 12 years of teaching I have seen how much technology has changed education right before my eyes. It's amazing how fluent my students have become using Google docs, Google slides, Blogger, etc. I have seen the level of work produced by the students increase because of technology. I feel like I'm sending my students into high school and beyond with a great tech foundation. The Chromebooks truly allow my students to show their best work.

The kids have enjoyed not having to share Chromebooks! There are more Chromebooks in our classroom rotation now, so students have more opportunities to access technology. I have noticed that the "new dark gray Chromebooks" are the first ones to be used. They are so fast and connect to the internet very quickly. The students take care of them like they are their own. It is great to see.

  • Chromebooks! Not Boring Notebooks!

    Funded Dec 15, 2016

Thank you so much for valuing my teaching, classroom and most of all my students. I have been teaching for 10 years now and have seen my teaching and classes change through the use of technology. I am lucky that my school values including technology and helping students learn technology like Google docs and Google slides among other programs so they can be successful in our world. It has been so great to see how including technology also improves the final product I am able to see as a teacher. It truly shows off the students best work and skills.

The kids have enjoyed not having to share Chromebooks! There are more Chromebooks in our classroom rotation now, so students have more opportunities to use. I have noticed that the "new black Chromebooks" are the first ones to be used. They are so fast and connect to the internet very quickly. The students take care of them like they are their own. It is great to see.

Students in my 8th grade language arts classroom use technology daily. Through Google Classroom and Google Drive, my students work through the writing process using their account on a Chromebook. I have seen the level of writing change drastically when I switched from having students using notebook and pencil to technology. Students are not afraid to "just start writing" because they know we can cut-copy-paste and move things around during writing conferences. It is a lot less scary for reluctant writers to type and be able to make mistakes, fix spelling, etc. More Chromebooks would make it possible for each student to work on their own piece of writing rather than having to share. I am huge on independent reading and devote 2 hours a week to this in my classroom. I grew up hating to read because my teachers didn't invest in creating classroom libraries with books that kids actually want to read. I'm proud to say that no one leaves my class each year without a changed mindset. I teach the students about genres, authors and my favorite titles and in turn, they teach each other through Book Buzzing (BookTalks and BookBlogs). The students have to do 2 total each quarter. This is why we need Chromebooks! I also teach one class of intervention each day where I take the students who are struggling the most with reading and/or math. On Wednesdays we devote our one hour together doing Genius Hour. The students choose a topic of their choice to research and take through the writing process using technology. More Chromebooks would mean less sharing!
