How often do we, as adults, choose to sit at a table and chairs when we are working on a project, reading a book, surfing through Facebook, or chatting with a friend? I know for me, that isn't very often. I find myself getting antsy during meetings where my only options are to stand or sit at a traditional table. More often than teaching my content, I find myself teaching my students how to make choices that are going to allow them to be the most successful. If any of you have ever spent more than five minutes in a sixth grade classroom, you would experience first hand the high amounts of energy that are pumping through those rooms! My students have a lot of energy! Instead of continuing the cycle of punishing them for not being able to channel their energy appropriately, I want to give them an outlet to use that energy in a positive light. I am requesting a rug, floor cushions, medicine ball seats, chair disks, lap desks, and bean bag chairs to provide a variety of seating options for my students. I often find myself creating my own workspace at a local coffee shop where I can sit comfortably on a couch, and I want to give my students those same options. Giving my students access to these materials will allow me to teach them how something as simple as moving from a traditional desk to the floor can increase productivity, decrease distractions, and help make school more enjoyable!
