Forged by Fire
Funded Apr 29, 2013At the beginning of the school year, I read Forged by Fire to my classes. Only having two copies of the book was a challenge. My students enjoyed being read to, but it was very difficult to catch students up after they were absent. Some students also like the visual of the text in front of them, even if they're being read to. That wasn't possible with just two copies of the book.
I'm excited that my students next year won't face those challenges. Now, each child will have a copy of the book. They can follow along when I read to them, and now, they can read with a partner or group as well. With each student having their own copy, it will be easy for students to catch up on missed chapters after missing school.
Knowing that I have the books ready for next school year, I'll be taking time this summer to review and create activities to go along with the novel. My students will be starting the year with a great book!”

Seeking Sequels IV
Funded Mar 21, 2013As soon as the books arrived, they were a big hit. Students were already planning their reading lists as the books were being taken out of the box. I love how excited they get about new books.
To reward the students who met their reading goals for the first three grading periods, I gave them first choice of the new books. They were thrilled, and the Haddix novels in the Among the Hidden series were the first to be picked. When I let the rest of the class choose books, all the boys wanted to read I am Number Four.
No one has finished their books yet, but they happily read each day. Thank you for helping me keep my students excited about books!”

Still Seeking Sequels
Funded Jun 12, 2012The box of books arrived a few weeks ago. My students were so excited! They were ready to tear the box open immediately. I love seeing them get so excited about new books.
Since then, they've started reading, planned what they're going to read next, and they're talking about what they're reading to their peers. They're even encouraging each other to read certain books.
Thank you for your donations for this project. There is nothing better than getting children excited about reading. This wouldn't have been possible without you. Thank you.”

Seeking Sequels III
Funded Feb 15, 2012The box of books arrived with perfect timing, just two weeks before ISTEP testing. That was very convenient because every teacher these students have was reminding them that they needed books to read for when they finished their tests. That helped incite excitement for brand new books, and many books were checked out right away.
My students, especially the boys, went crazy over the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid book and Percy Jackson series. One of my girls was thrilled for the Elle Hopkins books, and another was elated over the next Pretty Little Liars book. Overall, my students were just thankful for some new options.
Thank you for supporting my classroom and providing my students with books. It can be a challenge to get pre-teens and teens reading, and this grant helps me keep their attention and interest with each book series they enjoy. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.”

Seeking Sequels II
Funded Sep 29, 2011Thank you so much for your donation. The box of books arrived yesterday. My students were so excited to see them. They already went through them and decided what they're going to read. One girl has already started the first Amulet book. The other girls are excited about the Pretty Little Liars series. The boys all want to read Schooled for the Bluford Series.
I love seeing my students get excited about books, and you've helped me make that possible. I truly appreciate your donation, and my students do too. Thank you!”

Great, Gripping Graphic Novels
Funded May 10, 2011My students get ridiculously excited about graphic novels. So, when the box arrived, it was pure joy. In turn, I was thrilled because my students are going to be reading! There isn't anything more exciting than that.
Thank you so much for contributing to this grant and for supporting my classroom. Graphic novels really do make reading more fun for my students. By being able to provide graphic novels to my students, I can easily "trick" them into reading.
Thank you again for your donation. It means a great deal to my students.”

Funded Jun 2, 2011The dictionaries are here, and they are already being used. My students are currently writing papers about immigration in their neighborhoods. The dictionaries have been very useful for the drafting process, and we'll get them out again when we edit.
Thanks to you, I can toss the old dictionaries that are missing entire letters, and my students won't have to waste any more time searching for what they need.
Thank you for supporting my students and my class. It means a great deal to me and my students!”

Funded Apr 11, 2011Thank you for supporting my classroom library. When my students see new books on the shelf, their faces light up like it's Christmas! One boy who has been asking for the book Solidarity, the second book in the Furnace series, was particularly excited. The book barely made it to the shelf before it was in his hands!
Middle school aged children can be reluctant readers, but with the right books, they truly flourish. Thank you for helping me make that possible. This is such an important age for these children to be readers! ”

Funded Mar 22, 2011Thank you for supporting this project. My students love to read books that are part of a series. They enjoy starting a new book when they already know the characters and some background information. They got lost in the stories and always eagerly await the next book.
Series books are also my tricky way to get my students to read more. If I get them to read one book in a series, they end up wanting to read them all! By supporting this project, you're really supporting reading as a hobby. Again, thank you so much! My students were so excited when the books arrived.”

Funded Mar 22, 2011Thank you for helping fund this project. The books that were purchased will be used to help my students learn literary devices, such as personification and onomatopoeia, during our poetry unit. Literary devices can be a challenge for students to grasp. However, I have found that using children's books to show examples of literary devices helps students grasp the concepts. That is why this project was so important.
Thank you again for your support. Because of donors such as yourselves, my students will understand literary devices, and more importantly, they will apply them to their own writing. ”
