Divergent: A Dauntless Approach to Literature
Funded Dec 10, 2013When my students received the resources, they were curious and excited about the unit to come. A few students had actually read the book before, and they began telling other students how much they enjoyed it.
The students read Divergent outside of class. We discussed this novel once a week. Our discussion was very nontraditional. Instead of a class discussion, each week the students brought in a creative writing piece that responded to the particular section we just read. We wrote poems, redacted stories, newspaper articles, and essays about the book. The students read their creative pieces to their workshop groups, which helped them develop revision and editing skills.
Our overarching standard for this unit was "develop and strengthen writing through revision." Now my students understand the importance of revision, and the difference between revision and editing.
We were able to teach this skill through an engaging young adult text, and for that, we owe all donors all huge thank you!!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Carper
