  • Back to School Supplies

    Funded Aug 26, 2024

Thank you for your generous donations to our first grade classroom. We've been in school for a couple of months now and have been loving every item that's been donated to us!

The mini laminator and laminating sheets have been essential in creating durable schedule slips and other resources that we use daily on our white board. The laminator has been very helpful!

The students have loved the gel pens for Gel Pen Day! They also love writing and drawing with the gel pens during Fun Friday time. :)

The privacy folders have also been helpful to allow the students to work without distractions.

Every item donated has been a great asset and tool to our classroom! Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Schneider

  • Colorful Writing Materials

    Funded Jun 6, 2023

Thank you so much for the colorful writing materials! The students have been enjoying using the pens, papers, and sentence strips during writing time! We use the sentence strips every week for our spelling words that follow the phonics patterns! The bright colors and large tri-line outline are very helpful for neat handwriting and catching the students' eyes. Thank you!!

The pens are so fun for the students to use during writing time as well! Using fun colors makes writing time more exciting! It also encourages students to stay engaged in the lesson.

Thanks again for your kind donations!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Schneider

  • Composting at Carl Sandburg/DCS Elementary

    Funded Nov 3, 2022

Thank you for your thoughtful and generous donations to our school. We are so happy to have a small compost bin in every classroom at Sandburg/DCS! The students love that they are able to help the planet by composting during snack time. Each student is responsible and enjoys doing their part to make the world a better place, one banana peel at a time! We are so grateful for your kind donations; we couldn't have done it without you! Thanks to you, the students at our school are building lifelong sustainability habits.”

  • First Grade Classroom Materials

    Funded May 1, 2022

Thank you so much for your kind and generous donations to our first grade classroom. We absolutely love the books! These books will be enjoyed by many first grade students for years to come. The Owl Diary and Amelia Bedelia chapter books are a big hit in our classroom! They allow students to use their imagination and creativity as they read fiction and fantasy stories. We are also very appreciative of the writing journals and all other classroom materials. They are helping us to learn and grow every day.”

  • Reading and Organization Materials

    Funded Nov 1, 2021

Thank you for donating to our classroom! We were so excited to receive all of our new learning materials. We now have a large variety of books for the students to choose from!

The leveled readers are amazing! The students can choose books that are at their "just-right" level. This helps young readers build confidence as they learn to read. It also allows students to find books that they feel comfortable reading independently.

Your kind donation will not only make a positive impact on the 24 students in our class this year, but for many students in the years to come.

    Thanks again for your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Schneider

  • Reading in First Grade

    Funded Oct 19, 2021

You are amazing! Thank you for putting these wonderful books in the hands of 24 eager students! I know these will be a tremendous teaching resource for years to come in my classroom, and most importantly they will inspire and motivate dozens of future young readers and writers.

Students read the books with a strong writer's eye, noticing techniques that the authors utilized. One observation was in the Liquid Rainbow book how the author instructed the reader to slowly pour the liquid. My student explained how the author's word choice, slowly, helps the reader to understand better how to do the experiment so they don't accidentally pour too quickly. Other observations included students recognizing how authors signal time and order with transition words or step by step numbers in books like How to Babysit a Grandpa or How to Build a Fizzy Rocket. Students also learned a lot about including helpful hints such as how long to leave the egg in vinegar for the Bouncing Egg Experiment.

Not only did my students notice all these great techniques from our mentor texts and authors, they felt empowered and inspired to experiment and try them out in their own stories! My 1st graders grew a great deal in their writing thanks to these books and your generosity! Thanks again!”

  • Book to Celebrate Holidays Around the World

    Funded Nov 30, 2021

Thank you so much for helping to fund this project! I was so excited when all of the books arrived. I love how my students can see themselves, each other, and the world through these books.

We have had a wonderful time reading about the different holidays celebrated around the world. Recently we have been learning all about Chinese New Year. The students were excited to learn the traditions, customs, and types of foods used to celebrate this holiday.

I am so happy to have a more diverse classroom library. It is so important for every child to feel that they are represented in their school.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Schneider

This classroom project was brought to life by The DonorsChoose Community and 2 other donors.
My 1st graders learn to write how-to stories as part of our writers' workshop. In order to write like an author, I first immerse my students in well-written how-to books on a variety of topics. Students are inspired and motivated by these wonderful books. They also start to make great observations of techniques authors use as they teach the reader how to do something new. Students notice transition words and steps written in order, materials and ingredients lists, how the illustrations and photos match the words and enhance the writing, and how authors employ helpful hints to assist the reader as they attempt something for the very first time. My students also learn about tide pools, opinion writing, personal narratives, and the difference between wants and needs. The twinkle lights will provide a warm, inviting, and cozy reading environment for the children.
