Our world is quickly changing & a basic knowledge of science, technology, and mathematics is essential to make informed personal & political (voting) decisions. In my chemistry and biomedical science classrooms, you will find students from all kinds of backgrounds. There are various socioeconomic backgrounds, ethnicities, and cultural backgrounds. Over half of of the students at our school are considered socioeconomically disadvantaged and we have a large number of English language learners with over 40 different first languages. Ability levels also vary greatly. In the same classroom, you will find GATE students, special education students, and English language learners, not to mention our class size average is 36-38. Despite these hurdles, I hope to inspire minorities to enter the STEM field and to improve critical thinking and problem solving skills for all of my students.
