My students are such physical learners. Building arrays with foam cubes help students understand prime and composite numbers, basic math facts (you know, the ones we adults had to memorize through 12 times tables), as well as area and perimeter. These types of concepts students have to learn can be made easier by using manipulatives. Feeling the math in their hands and being able to change it physically really makes my students better understand the pencil and paper solutions. Using cuisenaire rods for example can help students see that the size of thirds really depends on what 1 whole is. These tools also give students the chance to be creative and see math in different ways. I have had students use pattern blocks to understand decimals, fractions and geometric shapes. Math, just like many things, can be done in a variety of ways. These math supplies really help students see that by using them or watching others use them as well.
