I teach in a Head Start Transition classroom, which means my students start the school year at 2 years old, but turn 3 before Feb. 1. Head Start serves the whole family, which means we provide information and support to the families as well as the students. Most of my students receive food stamps, live in public housing, and utilize a food bank. Many live in violent parts of the city, and are constantly living in fear. The families I serve have one thing in common: they love their children and want their children to succeed in life. Though most of my work is focused on learning social and emotional skills, this is a crucial time for introducing academics.
