Younger students need laminated materials for learning the alphabet, math, reading comprehension, science, colors, shapes, spelling words, writing, and to practice fine motor skills. Older students need laminated schedules, checklists, graphic organizers, and reference sheets in order to increase their level of executive functioning and independence. Laminating these items makes them compatible for use with dry erase markers, which allows for repeated use. Repetition is key for students with disabilities to learn new skills and generalize their knowledge.
Due to their disabilities, many of our students struggle with low frustration tolerance and maintaining self control. This often results in students damaging and destroying educational materials and supplies. Additionally, repetition is key for many students with disabilities. A laminator would allow us to make our materials more durable for daily use, and lengthens the life of our materials, which will benefit more students in the future and free up funds for other materials, supplies, equipment, and educational opportunities.
Because we are a small program, we do not have the backing of a large school district to purchase curriculum, educational materials, and supporting supplies very frequently. Our school does not currently have a large laminating machine. Many teachers have paid out of pocket to laminate classroom materials. My colleagues and I would greatly appreciate you helping us meet the needs of our students and support their learning!
