  • Spreading Positivity and Helping Our Focus

    Funded May 11, 2023

Wow! Thank you so much. We’re on a field trip and just shared the news with the kids who are very happy. They love these focus items. Please know we will use them well both this year and next. Your support means a lot to all of my student and me.”

  • Art in Literature- Graphic Novels Make the Connection

    Funded Nov 29, 2022

Thank you so much! My students were so excited to see the new book, especially the Demon Slayer box set. I have to keep it safe under my desk and let students borrow one book at a time. It's been awhile since I've had that level of excitement about reading.

We are also reading John Lewis's book March and I am able to make connections about using graphics in that book and the books they are reading for choice. It's a powerful opportunity to give all of my students access to quality books no matter what their reading level is.”

  • Sometimes It Is All Fun and Games

    Funded Feb 7, 2022

Thank you! My students were so excited to see all the new games at once. They were impressed that someone donated for them to get the games. They also loved the idea that I was willing to give them class time to play the new games!

Having breaks from the academic time as both rewards and a chance to re-engage in person has been really important for the kids coming back from e-learning. They are playing as I write your thank-you and everyone is more engage and on task than a typical Friday afternoon.

All of my 7th grade students at Northwest Middle are grateful for your donation and your interest in helping us.”

  • New Year, New Start

    Funded Jan 7, 2022

Thank you so much! Coming back after the winter break as difficult and the new materials helped. Right after we returned, there were some major changes as I had to leave me resource students and work more with general education kids. Both groups appreciated the new materials as good byes and hellos. Thank you for helping with that transition. All groups really loved the black facemasks and the bookmarks especially.

The masks were unique to our group and the bookmarks, headphones and pencils were a nice gift for each child.”

  • Big Kids Want Books With Pictures Too!

    Funded Mar 6, 2020

This made quite a difference to my students as I was able to model reading strategies at a high level with fun and visually stimulating books.

My students also used these books to practice their fluency reading aloud to each other and to younger siblings at home.

This project was funded shortly before we went on remote learning. I was able to reading the pictures books over the camera on the google meet.

Thank you for giving these students a chance to read fun books at their level and to bring these books home to their parents or younger siblings.”

  • Thousands of Books, One Device

    Funded Aug 12, 2021

Thank you so much for the Kindles for my classroom. My students love them and feel special because they each have one to use in class. It's amazing how gentle and careful they are with the devices. They love asking for new books and almost always hearing a yes. If the books is available on Kindle or audible, I buy it or get it from the library for them instantly. They don't have to wait to read what they want to read and choice is so important for kids to become life long readers.

The kindles are also very important to my resource students because they are 8th graders who read between the 1st and 4th grade levels. The Kindles allow them to read books at their level without other students see what they are reading. That has been very freeing for some of these students.

The Kindles have had a surprise benefit of filling a gap when students forget to bring their chromebooks from home each day. This is is our first year as a 1:1 school with students bringing their computers back and forth everyday. The kindles have helped when a student has forgotten their device. Thank you for bringing this technology into our classroom. My students and I really appreciate it!”

  • Keep Calm and Learn On

    Funded Dec 3, 2019

Thank you so much for the fidget devices and positive message posters for our classroom. My students really appreciated the fidget devices during our testing period. They helped calm and focus the kids.

We have developed a routine in our class that students can pick a focus or fidget device at the beginning of class and then return them to the bin at the end of the period. This helps focus the kids during class and develops an independent routine where they know that they can take care of their own needs.

Thank you again for our positive messages posted around the room, the wobble seats and especially the fidget/focus devices. We all appreciate them and they help our learning.”

  • New Place to Read Some New Books!

    Funded Dec 30, 2018

Thank you so much for your donation to get a comfortable place to read and some new books. My students' love of reading is always engaged when new books appear in our room. They really appreciated the graphic novels and books they had requested.

The bean bags and pillows have made reading in class even more enjoyable as we have a comfortable reading nook. These materials have had the additional benefit of practicing sharing and taking turns. Some students took it upon themselves to create a schedule to make sure the new items were enjoyed by everyone. I had not anticipated this extra lesson of sharing and responsibility.

Thank you again for making my students feel valued and important. That such an key element of the class climate I'm always striving to achieve and your help in doing so is very appreciated.”

  • Learning Vocabulary to the Rhythm of Music

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

Thank you so much for our headphones and Flocabulary subscription. Students are able to use the headphones for many different things and find that listening to reading from text to speech or audio books has really bad a difference. Our classroom is much quieter and each student is able to focus on his or her own sounds.

The students love the hip-hop videos from Flocabulary that I can use to start a new lesson. I think the music helps them remember the ideas much better than my voice sometimes.

We really appreciate the headphones and the difference they made in our classroom.”

  • Out Of Date And Out Of Touch--Help Our Classroom Library

    Funded Nov 30, 2017

My students and I thank you so much for your generous contributions to building our classroom library. When I placed these new books on the chalk ledge for the students to see the all of the covers, they were impressed with all new books that they actually wanted to read. In fact, many were a little shocked the number and quality of new books all at once. Many of these books are graphic novels at the middle interest level. They were also touched that strangers cared about them and their learning. These books have each already been through several hands as the students quickly read and return them. They have revitalized my reading class and engaged students who previously had not been reading. Both their math and science teacher have complained to me about my students reading during their classes. This is not a problem that I mind having. While I did discuss the appropriate time and place to be reading, I have pleased that they are carrying books with them from class to class and reading every chance they get.

This infusion of text has also motivated me to continue bringing more new books in to my class and giving students a voice and choice as we select titles. I am so touched you donated to my students and I see the fruits of your donation every day as my students are reading significantly more today than they did before this project.

Thank you again for your support and donation.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ryan

Readers want to see themselves and their interests mirrored in what they read. Right now, our classroom library mirrors the teacher and not the students. It's getting older and in need of a refresh. I want to put the books students are asking me for in their hands. I'm often asked for more graphic novels, more "life problem" books, y más libros en español. Without more relevant choices for my students, more of them are making the choice not to read at all. One of my goals is to create lifelong readers, and I know that will never happen if I don't instill a love of reading now. The best way to do that is to match the right student to the right book. The more books we have in our classroom, the more likely I'll be able to do that.
