Having culturally responsive and inclusive books in our classroom library will build my students' reading comprehension while also allowing them to see themselves reflected in the books we read. They are all from such different backgrounds- it would be a disservice to them if the books I read in class are not reflective of that. I will use the books to teach about tolerance and to create a conversation about diversity. For example, in the past my students have asked me questions about another student at our school who has autism. Being able to read a book like "I See Things Differently: A First Look at Autism" will help give them a better understanding of what autism is and teach them to be more accepting of children at our school who may be a little different than they are. My goal is to foster a classroom culture where my students feel valued and have respect for others, no matter what they look like or how they may be different. Having these books in my library will help me make my students more aware and accepting of the differences that make themselves and their peers unique. Your donation will help bring compassion and literacy to my classroom.
