For many of my students, living on the south side of Chicago is very difficult. Gang violence, poverty, and robbery are some of the daily things that my students face in their neighborhoods. When students walked into my class, they felt a sense of safety and understanding. With that sense of peace, my students' best work was created and displayed around the school. The smiles on their faces are priceless when receiving feedback from their peers, staff, and their parents. My students can express their feeling thru design (blueprinting) and create masterpieces from their design. Last year, my students designed and built bridges, domes, and cardboard rollercoasters. Majority of my students design are made thru cardboard and construction paper. With budget cost from the State of Illinois, cardboard for my students does not existence. Without cardboard and other engineering materials, my students ideas and design would be limited During class, my students used scissors to cut things out. It was very frustrating because scissors are used to cut paper and not cardboard. However, we got the job done. With your help, my students will be able to have cardboard, glue guns, balsa wood, sculpting wire, and x-acto blades and their wonderful ideas will continue to come to life.
