It is often a challenge for middle school aged students to see the "fun" of school and learning especially when struggling to have their basic needs met. Additionally, my students have unique learning styles and skills that shine through project based learning. This year, I have seen the most success and growth by having my students DOING. Providing my students opportunities to demonstrate understanding of content with manipulatives and technology would allow them to critically consider concepts not otherwise possible with a dreary worksheet. I would very much love to continue to transform my classroom into one where they can collaborate with peers, be creative, build self-esteem, and develop persistence! LEGO sets - we all know them and grew up with them. I would like to bring LEGO sets into my classroom. Memorizing dates, people, and events is so old school! With LEGO sets, my students can recreate important events in time such as the American Revolution, Westward Expansion, and Civil War. Not only will students create these events, but they can annotate the scenes, take pictures of their scenes, and turn the still photos into a stop motion video or a narrated timeline. Not only are LEGO bricks fun to work with, but the students would be developing lateral thinking and planning skills under the disguise of "play"! Your donation would allow my students to collaboratively recreate major historical events and become storytellers of our nation's growth. Thank you so much for your donation!
