  • Ear ye Ear ye

    Funded Dec 28, 2018

Thank you for your investing in our classroom. You providing our class with a computer has increase the academic drive in our class. Students are reading more. They now have a wider range of books to choose from. Our school purchase reading programs on line. This allows us to access various levels of books. Having access to these books allows all of my students the opportunity to find books of their choice.

Another way that this new computer has enhanced the level of learning in our class; is that more children are able to access online resources . Some of my students are visually impaired. These students are now able to use this computer; by increasing the size of the fonts. They are now able to read their choice books with less obstacles. The touch screen is super helpful. They are now able to navigate the screen without looking for small letters on the keyboard.

My English language learners are elated. They enjoy reading books in their home language. Also they are able to translate words that they don't know in English to their home language.

This computer is a delight for all students in our classroom. We greatly appreciate your support.”

  • Let's Learn About Financial Literacy

    Funded Oct 30, 2018

When my students first saw the financial literacy kit they were so excited! They started to clap. They were ready to learn immediately. They looked forward to the every lesson with great enthusiasm. They have many questions at the beginning of each lesson. After each lesson I use their questions to develop my lesson plans for our next sessions.

My students are enjoying sharing their learning using puppets. They were very shy learners. However they became very animated when they use puppets to tell their stories. Also Classroom conversations are much richer. Last week student had a budget to go shopping for things they would need to make their favorite meal . They had to to discuss needs and wants in ther planning groups . I was amazed by their rich conversations. Students who hardly share their ideas before was excited to share their taught through their puppets.

Our next steps is to visit a neighborhood supermarket and a local vegetable and fruit mmarket and compare prices . We will also build lessons around these trips . We will address nutritional content of locally grown vegetable and fruits. We will also compare the prices of fresh foods to package food. We will visit a school that have a vegetable garden and develop a plan to build our own school and home garden for everyone. Even for those who live in small apartments. We will write a proposal to our principal to convince her on why we need our own vegetables and fruit garde in our school”

  • Books Today Keep Illiteracy at Bay

    Funded Dec 13, 2017

Thank you so much for your donations and inspiring words. Your contributions to our classroom library is greatly appreciated by all of my students.

In my reading classes these books are used in many different ways. For example during independent reading time. During this allotted time students read a book of choice. If it is a fiction book They would explore characters trait , conflicts and resolutions or solutions. They would also add new vocabulary words to their personal dictionaries . Also they will explore authors purpose. To further their understanding they will ask questions before , during and after reading. When they are reading nonfiction books they will collect facts that are amazing to them so that they can share with their classmates or their buddy class which is a younger grade.

Students also use these book during book club. Where they will focus on a specific topic, for example bulling . They will read the book and share their views around the topic. During these discussions they are developing their debating skills.

These books are a great addition to our reading resources . Students are showing growth in their reading comprehension. They are also building reading stamina. As a result their reading goals are being met much more readily and their test scores are improving.”

  • Books Can Transform Our Lives

    Funded Dec 22, 2017

Thank you so much for your donations. Your contributions to our classroom library are well received by all of my students. We were able to use some of the books to research important African Americans during the month of February. Also we use some of the books to learn about important women in our world and their contributions. On a daily basis my students get to choose books by some of their favorite authors and their interest.

The boys that I service are having a great time reading their favorite series . They are more excited to share the lessons that they learned from their books during book talk. Also meeting their monthly reading goals are much easier to accomplish. There is even a waiting list for some of their favorite books. The girls are enjoying these books also. They are competing with each other on who will read the most book each month.

Their is a buzz around the school about these new books. Other students are asking to borrow these books. As a result I created a book club so that more children can join the book craze and have access to these books.

it's a delight to have these new books as a reading resource. Some students benchmark levels has improved up to two or more levels during a short period. Their reading comprehension are escalating .”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Bacchus

Imagine moving to a new country. You walk into a classroom and you may not of ever had any formal education before. You have never read or written and you have this smiling teacher talking to you in a language you don't understand. These are the children I teach every day. I work in a school with a very high immigrant population in New York City. These student are from low income families. At home they have no books to practice reading. Many of my students have very limited schooling in their own language and are now thrust into a formal school setting. We move from learning letters to reading very quickly. We help students learn English while holding on and becoming literate in their own language as well. My students have come from all around the world from many different and often difficult situations. They hold the American Dream, but need the tools to make them successful. My students need to have many opportunities to read books from various genres. They will then see themselves as true readers. We will use these books and magazines to aid us in the process of becoming life long readers. Students who are confident readers will be ready to face the challenges of higher education and the work place.
