My students are in desperate need of a current, up-to-date resource in English class. The Language Arts textbooks we have are from 1988. Not only are the textbooks old, but they do not reflect the current state standards.
SCOPE Magazine is the answer to our prayers! Not only is it interesting and vibrant, but it is exactly what my students need to stay current and be able to "compete" with higher income districts who have laptops, tablets, and many other resources that our district lacks. The magazine is a fluid resource that reflects the current standards. It promotes critical thinking, shows students how to create evidence-based arguments, and keeps them up-to-date on current events. As an added bonus, Scholastic SCOPE is beginning to offer some of their articles in Spanish. Best of all, the students love the magazine so much that they come in begging to read! As an educator, there is no better feeling in the world.
As their teacher, it breaks my heart to think that I cannot provide them with the tools and resources they need to succeed in the world of education today. However, I know that there are those out there who will help me show my students that people do care . . . do believe in them . . . and are willing to lend a helping hand to make sure they succeed! SCOPE, I truly believe, has been responsible for much of my student progress the last several years. It has helped me, as an educator, create and prepare engaging, relevant, and effective lessons for my students. Now that we have lost funding for Scholastic SCOPE, I am hoping I can find a way to keep this resource in the hands of my students. Thank you so very much!
