Special Needs Literacy in Art
Funded Dec 13, 2023Thank you so much for your generous donations to our project. We began using our Nasco practice sketchbooks immediately in the artroom! These sketchbooks were a very important tool for us as it helped us to facilitate quick-draws and still-life drawing practices in the art room. Another tool that we began using right away were the kraft butcher paper for whole group drawing and sculpting activities and the boogie board for individual quick sketch and share activities. Our students especially loved the boogie board because they get to quickly express their thoughts and feelings without words!
In addition to these above mentioned materials we have also added the new reading books to our library and are using them as part of our read alouds. Student's loved "Im not Just a Scribble" By Diane Alber!
Finally, we can't express our gratitude enough! Your contribution to our project really helped to get our art room routines to include literacy and drawing and off to a good start for the year.”

Special Needs Special Art
Funded Sep 29, 2022My students and I would like to express how truly grateful we are for your generous support of our classroom project.
To Kickstart the year students were working on self portraits. With materials such as the 19X24 Bristol boards students were able to accomplish this task. Students included all the necessary elements of art such as lines shapes and color using the materials such as the felt tip pens, sakura cray-pas multicultural pastels and dot markers that we received.
Our unit on Self portraits was such a success because we had received all the materials we needed to accomplish the task. Thank you so much for supporting our classroom.”

Funded Jan 15, 2020We would like to thank you so very much for your generous contribution to our project. The materials were put to use immediately!!! For example, the model magic was a very manageable material to use in our sculpture unit based on the artworks of Wayne Thiebaud.
We were also able to utilize our neon dry erase markers to create unique window drawings in our study on graffiti art.
Unfortunately, with our schools being currently closed we were not able to upload or share any pictures. But we are nevertheless very, very thankful for your support and look forward to your continued support of our classroom.”

Inspiring Young Artists With Special Needs.
Funded Nov 29, 2016Thank You so very much for your kind donations to our project! My students and I are so grateful.
The materials we received were used in so many ways, when my students first saw the materials they were very excited! We used all of the materials for boosting engagement in the art room and our students really enjoyed them. To know for example that we would be using MAGNA TILES for making math connections through art and not just play! students showed greater interest in learning new concepts through the use of these tools.
Last term during our illustration unit our students were able to go through a whole "drawing process" as writers would the "writing process..." Using our BRAND NEW FELT TIP pens for publishing final drafts, was a such a huge experience. Because our students were so accustomed to using pencils, there was such a seriousness about using pens for the first time.
Overall, my students exemplified amazing responsibility and engagement with these tools. Thank You”

Special Arts and Special Needs
Funded Jan 19, 2016My students were so excited to receive the new materials from this project. For example, with our brand new neon-dry erase boards students we were able to practice creating and sharing stories through illustrations-- Bridging literacy and art skills seamlessly in the art room.
Whenever new materials or teaching tools are introduced into my classroom, I can definitely see the level of student engagement and enthusiasm for learning elevate. My students show more confidence and interest in their work when they have the tools they need to create.
The new materials that we received will go towards making sure that my students continue to utilize the arts as a multimodal vehicle for making interdisciplinary connections through the arts and learning about the world around them.
Thank So much for helping to keep our classroom active and engaging.”

New Year, New Gear! For The Art Of Special Need
Funded Dec 29, 2014My students and I were so grateful for the materials funded by your generous donations to our project! Each year, our classroom uses up a lot of essential art materials such as crayons, markers, glue sticks and paper. With continued support from donors like you, we are able to have the resources necessary to teach our students new concepts and allow them to explore their artistic expression when in the classroom.
The materials in which we received were used to help students explore, understand and make art with ease. For example, with the adaptable scissors, students with difficulty holding scissors could easily grasp and squeeze. The Jumbo crayons were also very helpful to have. Whereas before when we used small crayons, the jumbo crayons were easy to grip and hard to break for little and big hands.
This project was a boost to my teaching and students' learning in that it also made it possible for more interdisciplinary connections in the art room. With the teaching touchables, magic nuudles and dot markers we received for example, students were able to explore sound, texture, color, shape, and numbers. In each exploration students made art and science connections, art and math connections; art and literacy and social emotional literacy connections as well.
Truly, it is with much gratefulness that I write to thank you for your contribution to our project!”

Funded Sep 17, 2014My students were very happy to receive the new materials from Donors Choose. Since receiving the items, we have been busy creating and building amazing things in the classroom! A lot of my students have been using a lot more expressive language and gestures, especially when it comes to using the Kapla building blocks. While it is still a learning process to develop hand-eye-coordination and spatial awareness when it comes to building, many are still very excited to share what they can do on their own with this new material.
With our art and social emotional literacy books that we received, we have been learning how to express emotions through writing and art making. Most rewarding to see is that now, a lot of students are beginning to share their feelings using these new ways of communication and are welcoming peers and teachers to play and create with them. I have seen such an improvement in socio-emotional, communication and social skills.
I have also been able to make new instructional materials to assess my students' learning and it has helped so much to inform my teaching.
Thank you so much again for all your kind donations and for making such a difference in our art room!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Golding

Funded Apr 7, 2014My students and I were very grateful and happy to receive the new supplies in the classroom.
Since September, I have seen so much growth in my students' learning development. With the added supplies, I have been able to better teach new concepts in art in unique ways. I have also been able to assess what my students like (such as what medium/tool) and use what they like to differentiate my lessons a little better.
Currently, my students are working on collaborative artworks four our school's first upcoming show and we are using all items donated to us to prepare for this event. With our new musical shakers for example, we are able to practice songs and body awareness. In addition, with the paint and other mediums donated to us, we are able to make costumes, props and stage design.
Overall, we are very grateful for the donations. My students are getting to experiment more with the materials and I am able to help them develop a better understanding of what it means to communicate; connect with peers and the world around them through art.”
