The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students already have a "home." In other words, I know exactly where everything will go. We just need your help in getting everything through our door! The two pocket charts will hang on the white board in front of the classroom and be used as a gathering place during our morning meeting. During this time the students will learn different math skills such as counting, patters, numbers, and shapes. Students will not be successful in areas such as counting and skip counting unless they have daily, repetitive practice. Calendar time allows me to work on these skills with my students, without taking time out of my math learning group.
The community carpet, water blocks, letter writing boards, and number bubbles will all be individual centers for students throughout the day. These centers will help my students with number and letter recognition and help teach social play.
The community carpet will allow my students to have to opportunity to play with some of their favorite things, blocks and cars! Playing with blocks stimulates learning in all domains of development, intellectual, physical, and social-emotional and language. The current research shows that block play is fundamental for later cognitive success for learning math and numbers.
Emergent writing is the way many younger students start writing. They start with scribbles, and over time hone those random slashes into letters. The writing boards will assist my students with the transition from slashes to letters.
