Still Going Green in the Bronx
Funded May 4, 2014We have started our seed investigations and thanks to all of you, we have the ability to begin in December! The children are so excited to see what might affect the growth of their seeds and with our compost bins, they are adding the additional nutrients to the soil. Other groups are investigating how light affects the growth of seeds. As you can see, we have completed our planting and are well on our way to finding our answers. We cannot thank you enough for your donations. You have made such a difference in the way we can educate these children. Thank you again for being so generous!”

Funded Mar 28, 2014I am so grateful to all of you for your support and donations for my students. I was overwhelmed by your generosity and I cannot begin to tell you all how much this means to us. The children are always curious as to what we are going to learn and what activity we will be doing next. In fact, the moment I mentioned the plan for our new project, they wanted to begin immediately. When we received the delivery of the project equipment, I knew it would be beyond their expectations.
My students were so excited when they first walked into the science classroom and saw the new materials. Their hands went up the second they sat in their seats. I heard the classroom whispers begin. They had so many questions! "What is that? What is in that container? Why is that here? Are we going to get a chance to use that? There is a picture of a worm on the box! Are there worms in there? Are they real? Why do you have worms in there? What do they eat?", were just some of the questions they asked me. I explained that we were fortunate enough to have received very generous donations that included compost bins, a worm bin and a Growlab. I also described how we would be using them. The gasps, smiles and excitement were just as I imagined they would be. My lessons began based on the children's inquisitive nature and their love of life science. The activities included in this project are student driven and hands-on. This helps to boost my teaching and my students' learning because they are engaged and actually seeing the concepts we are focusing on firsthand. Kinesthetic and visual learners benefit from these types of lessons. This is also the case with English language learners and students with disabilities. One example was our first lesson using the equipment. This lesson included identifying organisms that are decomposers and the way in which they help our environment. Seeing the worms at work allowed them to make the connection and understand the importance of decomposers. In addition, it made my students think of new questions which we hope to answer as we move forward with our project.
The buzz in our classroom has not subsided. It has only just begun! Although you may not realize it, you have made such an impact on these curious young scientists. We cannot thank you enough for your support and generosity.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Tirelli
