I teach in an urban school located in Georgia with more than 70% of students being eligible for free or reduced lunch. Because the majority of my students are African-American, it is difficult for them to make a connection with the Spanish-speaking world; they have no personal frame of reference. Although their interest level is high, they lack the resources to deepen their knowledge of other cultures and to practice their language skills in authentic situations.
