  • Freedom Writers

    Funded Dec 20, 2011

y students were so excited to receive "Freedom Writers Diary". They couldn't wait to start reading it in class. They really enjoyed the line game and peanut game and creating and presenting their personal coat-of-arms. I think the the one major thing that had the greatest impact on my students was reading stories about kids their own age having to fight for survival every day. One of my students put it best when they commented they could not imagine going to school or even walking out of their house and be in fear of loosing their life. These kids have experienced loss, but not from gang violence. Additionallty, most of them have never experienced a school system which refuses to show them the administration and staff care about their success. I guess we are lucky in that respect.

I hope by having read this book and watching the film, my students will become more tolerant and understanding of people from different cultures and backgrounds then what they have been exposed to; their exposure has been limited. One of my goals each year is to try to instill in my students that just because someone comes from a different culture or background doesn't mean they are any different on the inside from them.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Stump

  • Crazy for Books

    Funded Mar 28, 2011

I wish you could have seen the look of sheer delight that came across my students' faces the moment I unpacked the "Diary of a Whimpy Kid" books. They could not wait to begin reading.. Even our librarian was excited!

This gift has enabled me to read the book as a class thus introducing some of my students to Greg Heffley and his companions for the first time.. Many of my students were already huge fans, now Greg has a few more! What can I say, my students LOVE "Diary of a Whimpy Kid" books. And the best part is seeing their love of reading grow and igniting a desire to read in those students who are hesitant.

This was my first project with DonorsChoose and I could not believe how fast I had my request answered. Thank you Cindy and Crate&Barrel so very much. I plan on making this classroom set available to the entire school for all to enjoy.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Stump

We are a small high school of fewer than 400 students. The building is a converted vocational school. There is no stage or auditorium. The students are from low to moderate income families. This is a rural area primarily farming. Many of the students work on family farms or other jobs for extra money.
