My students need access to an iPad that can be used to serve as their voice while their individual speech generating devices are being repaired. As with every human being, we all tend to make mistakes. Although there are no mistakes without consequences, my students do not deserve to be without a voice even if it is temporarily. My students are high school students who are all diagnosed with Autism. As many may know, with Autism, communication skills are significantly impacted. In addition to their communication skills, my students’ sensory needs are often compromised and at times, their sensory system may be overstimulated by environmental stimuli’s which causes an unwanted response (i.e., throwing objects within proximity). As an educator, my students’ needs come first. They rely and require the consistency of their daily routines to generalize the learned concepts offered by the communication applications on their iPads. Without their iPads, my students experience regression to a degree that makes it difficult to teach new core words and skills needed for functional communication in addition to hindering their communication.
