  • A Growing Music Library!

    Funded Jan 15, 2025

What a difference this music makes in my classroom! Even these dozen books have had a huge impact on the quantity of music students have to choose from as NYSSMA season approaches. We went from having two to four choices per level to having over ten choices per level. This means an increase in genres, tempos, languages, and styles for students to be able to pick the music that best fits who they are, how they sing, and pick an area for growth throughout the process. For the first time, we have six freshman going to NYSSMA and six sophomores. This music has provided choice, opportunity, and excitement, and for that we are so grateful for your donation. Thank you again for supporting the arts!”

  • Building Literacy One Book Club at a Time!

    Funded Jan 15, 2025

Today was the day!! We started semester two with a book raffle. After hearing a synopsis of each book students received 5 tickets to make their choices and take a chance for their next book. Much to my surprise, the three biggest hits were They Cage the Animals at Night, The Last One, and The 7 1/2 Deaths Of Evelyn Hardcastle. There was drum roll before each name being called and so much joy and excitement. One of my favorite moments was right before we started a student yelled "WAIT! I need a picture of all the titles so I can add them to my what-to-read-next list!"

Thank you for providing this opportunity that turned into exactly what I hoped it would- an excitement for reading, a curiosity for other worlds, and connection. Students traded number with the partner who had their other book and were already organizing book swaps to read the other books that were on the table.

Special shout out to my secret donor who sent additional books from the list directly to the school! The student that was selected for the full trilogy came up to me after class to tell me how much the LOTR trilogy impacted her mom and she was so excited for her own new trilogy.

Thank you for supporting my classroom, and creating more points of connection for our music students.”

  • Backstage Shenanigans

    Funded Dec 16, 2024

As we head into tech week we (students AND teachers) are so excited for the items you provided us with- ESPECIALLY the Clorox wipes in the midst of all of the winter illnesses that are circulating. Our costume rack is up and running, and students are starting to set up their backstage area in a way that is safe, effective, and clean. The products that you donated are extremely helpful and appreciated.

The production team's favorite items are the Febreze sprays for sure, while the students are most excited for the make-up wipes. We are so grateful for donors like you who support the arts and all of the crazy little odds and ends that make our job easier!”

  • The Boomwhacker Experience!

    Funded Nov 19, 2024

Thank you again for your donation of the Boomwhackers! This was such a challenging experience for our Advanced Treble choir who had to adapt one of their concert songs onto these instruments. Many lessons were learned, and many voices were raised with laughter and joy. We worked on independent rhythms, understanding upbeats, tracking music, and maintaining tempos. I can't wait to use these in another 2 weeks with our freshman ear training class where we will use common songs to identify intervals aurally.

On top of class time, my lunch crew have the boomwhackers off the wall regularly and have actually learned part of Footloose on them just for fun.

Thank you so much for providing a new, fun source of learning for our students!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Allocco

  • Energize our Actors!

    Funded Dec 2, 2024

This year we're cutting loose- Footloose! And thankfully we have some snacks for energy! Rehearsals are already underway and students are still figuring out how to plan ahead and pack for the day. These snacks have come in handy and been near essential the last week as students transition and get used to the late nights. My favorite interactions are when the students grab the Ritz crackers and exclaim, "I love these! I haven't had these in years!" as if it's a novelty snack. I've put a mix of snacks in a container and the students love having a choice. I'm so grateful for your donation and so are my students. Thank you for choosing to support the arts.”

  • A Growing Music Library

    Funded Oct 5, 2024

Thank you so much for your donation to our classroom! We are at that time of year when students begin to select their NYSSMA solos and it has been such a joy to see the amount of choice they have because of these books that have been added to our library. NYSSMA is not a common place conversation in out classroom, students coming down during their lunch period to go through the manual, asking whether they should go classical or Broadway.... It's such a privilege to see students excited about music and their ability to choose. Thank you for investing in this first round of music books and getting our library off to such a spectacular start!”

  • Mindfulness and Kindness

    Funded Sep 18, 2024

Thank you so much for your donation to my classroom! As I was working on calming a student in tears down these boxes were brought into my room and I handed over the pop-it whale and the student took several minutes just focusing on the tactile feeling and motion as she regulated herself. My students literally cheered at the case of tissues (for more than just wiping away tears) and one of them joked that at some point nearly everyone in the class had likely cried in my room. The goldfish have been well received by a few students who found themselves a little hangry at the end of the day and struggling to stay focused. I also used a Hersey Kiss to get a smile out a student who had had a rough morning.

These donations are already going a long way and being loved and utilized. We are so grateful for continued support of what we happens in arts rooms. Thank you again.”

In my classroom we work on understanding and appreciating music. The truth is that not everyone will like every song all of the time, but being able to evaluate and appreciate music on a deeper level than "That's trash" or "BEST SONG EVER" is a skill that we are instilling. Our curriculum is a rock band program where students learn guitars, piano, bass, and drums throughout the year using current music, and giving lots of student choice. After building a foundation on these instruments we head into song writing, and students form their own "rock bands" as they declare a primary instrument from the ones above. As we grow and expand we hope to be able to offer college credits in music soon, helping defer college costs and set students up for a greater success later on. But they will always bring their love of music!
