In my classroom we work on understanding and appreciating music. The truth is that not everyone will like every song all of the time, but being able to evaluate and appreciate music on a deeper level than "That's trash" or "BEST SONG EVER" is a skill that we are instilling.
Our curriculum is a rock band program where students learn guitars, piano, bass, and drums throughout the year using current music, and giving lots of student choice. After building a foundation on these instruments we head into song writing, and students form their own "rock bands" as they declare a primary instrument from the ones above.
As we grow and expand we hope to be able to offer college credits in music soon, helping defer college costs and set students up for a greater success later on. But they will always bring their love of music!
