Just like every student learns academics differently, every student processes internal and external stimuli differently. In our classroom, we aim to give students the tools and skills they need to be successful in everyday life. This is taught by providing mental and emotional coping skills so that each individual can begin to monitor their own behaviors. Students naturally gravitate towards the tools they need, so it is important to have the variety of options available. Some learners can hear social and emotional stories and relate to them. The books chosen to meet the needs of these students will be used as an introduction for problem solving, empathy building, and emotional recognition. Others need hands-on experience, like that provided by the cooperative games, to understand real life instances that require coping skills. Race to Treasure, Stone Soup, and Outfoxed are a few of the games that require student teamwork to meet an outcome and win. Many need to dive right in with toys and sensory activities to process through a variety of emotions. The sensory table will be used with the kinetic sand, gel beads, and more for small group sensory exploration while the putty, Wikkistix, and sensory toys will be used for a students individual exploration time. We hope to provide an inclusive classroom with options that can meet the needs of all students while being practical enough to take into their everyday lives.
