  • Mini Mathematicians

    Funded Sep 8, 2023

The subscription to math resources, created by Dr. Nicki Newton has been a lifesaver and a game changer. She is a math expert who has had a huge impact on me and how I approach teaching math to my first graders.

Her website, Math Fact Fluency Playground, is full of games to help students practice new skills in an engaging manner. It also guides me to teach in a way that helps students with conceptual understanding and using precise math language. It provides me with an organized way to present math concepts and strategies, and provides opportunities for kids to get hands-on experiences that help them remember and expand their knowledge.

A highlight for my students is that I print out games for them to bring home to play with their families as well as to practice independently or with a friend in class, which they love. Thank you for helping us make math fun.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. F.

  • Always Learning

    Funded Jan 29, 2023

Thank you for your generous donation. I have been teaching for 18 years. As a New York City teacher, one of the big challenges I have is being moved to different assignments. This year I am teaching first grade. I needed help understanding the most effective way to teach my students how to add, subtract, and think about the math around them in everyday life. The professional development you helped give me access to is a series of videos covering topics by a math guru I respect and have learned so much from. I had already purchased a few of her books on my own but after watching a few of her YouTube videos, I knew that her professional development courses would help me put everything I had read about into action faster and more efficiently. My students have a lot of fun in math and are making great progress. Thank you for helping me make a difference.”

  • Let's Get Reading!

    Funded Dec 31, 2022

Thank you for helping me get my first-grade library filled out!

One of the challenges I face as a NY City public school teacher is the instability of assignments and physical resources from year to year. I have been at my current school for eight years and in that time I have been in three different positions, worked with five different co-teachers, on three different grade levels, and each year I move into another teacher's previously established classroom. This year, I was assigned to a classroom that did not have enough books for our emergent readers. I was able to spend a little time creating a project on Donors Choose and, thanks to your generous donation, quickly got the books my students needed and craved into their hands. You will be happy to know that my students read all of the books you got us, more than once, and have since moved on to higher leveled books.

The books are a nice mix of fiction and non-fiction books. The students loved the colorful pictures and were proud as they were able to read each book and move on to the next.

Each year has a new group of children and new obstacles to overcome. Your donation helped me easily clear this obstacle so I could stay focused on helping little learners succeed. Next year's kids will benefit as well.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. F.

  • Math Resources for First Graders

    Funded Sep 29, 2022

Your donations have helped me start my first year as a first grade teacher with confidence. The math materials you funded have been used frequently and with enthusiasm. My students love to learn through games and hands on materials. Today, I brought out a box of number cards that the students had not used in a couple of months. They have grown enough that they were ready for the next level of difficulty. They are now counting and comparing numbers up to 120! The games and materials are helpful for my students who are trying to get solid with the basics as well as those who need a challenge. Thank you for your generous donation. It has made a difference for me and my lovely first graders.”

  • Whiteboards for Everyone!

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

We received our white boards and my students are loving them. They were so excited to see them come out of the box, and loved that they each had their own new, clean white boards for math and ELA.

Our old ones made a mess because the fiber board they are made of was falling apart, they were hard to erase, and looked awful. The new boards help the kids stay organized and they save time in math because the outline of the models they use to solve problems is already on the board. They spend more time solving math problems and less time trying to draw their models just right.

They also love the ink pads and are thrilled to get stamps on their papers that acknowledge their hard work. I am grateful for your generosity, and will use these materials for years to come!”

  • Magazines are Interesting and Make us Want to Read!

    Funded Dec 31, 2016

We have just started to receive the magazines you helped us get. The math magazine is great for our mathematicians who are above grade level. They read the magazines when they finish their independent work, and it really helps them challenge themselves and learn about all kinds of interesting topics. All of the students will begin to see real life connections with math, the world they live in, and ways they can use math to do things they enjoy.

Our struggling readers are excited about the variety of magazines! They love having a choice, and the magazines are filed with all kinds of amazing articles and colorful pictures. They are motivated to read more, and are excited to talk about what they are learning.

Thanks for your generosity! It is greatly appreciated and your kindness is making a difference in the lives of amazing third grade students.”

  • Art Makes My Kids Feel Inspired!

    Funded Mar 9, 2016

    Dear Donors,

We are getting ready for our annual social studies fair. This year our theme is "Through the Decades." We are looking at American life throughout the decades. Each class is assigned a different decade, and conducts research to find out about the inventions, technology, politics, fashion, music, and art of their decade. The students then create artwork to transform their classrooms to look like the decade they researched. On the day of the fair, students will travel to other decades and students will come visit us.

Our class is studying the 1970s. Our students are busy creating a timeline to show who the presidents were, what genres of music were popular, and what was happening in the USA and the world. They are painting a classic car, the Firebird, a Jetsons cartoon, the Electric company and Sesame Street paintings. We will gather artifacts to set up a little museum, and we will play popular games from the 1970s as well as serve food that was trendy, such as fondue.

Your generous donations have helped us turn our creative ideas into a reality! I will post pictures when we complete some of the paintings, as we are in the process right now!”

  • Technology for Differentiating!

    Funded Dec 18, 2014

Thank you for your generous donations! We now have an iPad, and are using it to practice math skills, research Japan for a Social Studies project, and take pictures on field trips.

My students love technology, and the iPad makes learning fun and exciting for them. There are plenty of math apps to help them practice math facts and skills in a fun, interactive way.

The touch screen feature is great for some of my students who have difficulty using the keyboard on a computer. It is easy for them to participate in the same games as their peers, without frustration.

Your generosity is appreciated, and has made a difference in out classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. F.

  • Teaching Big Math Concepts

    Funded Feb 4, 2015

Thank you for the opportunity to take an amazing math class! I learned some important things that will help me as a teacher for years to come. My students are excited to do the hands on activities that I learned about to help them increase their basic math skills and understanding of numbers.

This class reminded me of some things I learned in graduate school that I have not used in a while, and also gave me new ways to present opportunities to help students develop and make sense of the mathematics that they come across in their everyday lives.

This unique chance to have a project funded to help me improve my skills is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your support.”
