It is hard enough for an adult to sit 6-7 hours a day in a chair, none the less a kindergartner. Not to mention, traditional seating is the worst position for one's spine and research has shown that long periods of uninterrupted sitting leads to long-term health problems and decreased productivity. The materials you help supply will ultimately improve not only my students' academic performance, but also their overall health by giving them options as to where and how they learn.
Research shows that short bouts of physical activity such as that encouraged by wobble cushions and balance balls increases on-task behavior, not to mention improves core strength and posture and burns more calories allowing for better oxygen flow to the brain and a higher metabolism. Such seating also stimulates students sense of touch, increasing sensory input, improving focus and information processing.
Allowing students the option to move and choose their "smart seat" or best seat for them, whether it be a floor cushion or lap desk, increases student engagement, motivation and self-awareness. Kayla Delzer in an article about flexible seating on Edutopia states, " giving students choice about their physical classroom space teaches them higher-order thinking skills." Some studies may even suggest laying on one's stomach on a yoga mat may increase penmanship. Last, but certainly not least, flexible seating also allows for greater collaboration and communication. Nontraditional seating and opportunities to relocate throughout the day increase overall academic performance.
With your help I can better ensure that as my kindergartners are developing their initial attitude about learning, it is positive, hopeful and enjoyable. Together we can better meet their learning needs, thus setting them up for future success.
