In my experience, it is safe to say that all children love stories. We are drawn to the excitement of a great plot, and we search for connections between characters and our own lives. Stories can show us a new perspective on history or shine a light on someone else's experience that we may never have considered before. Because stories are the way into children's hearts and minds, only great books will do when they are learning to become active and responsive readers. The books I chose for my classroom are highly engaging, so kids are motivated to read them. The books are largely historical fiction, which allows me to connect the topics to our learning throughout the day, not just during reading class. Sophia's War is a book set during the American Revolution, and I chose it because it has a girl protagonist--and she's a spy! The Fighting Ground is by Avi, and it tells the tale of a boy who fights in the American Revolution. Iron Thunder and Elijah of Buxton are both set during the Civil War. Avi has written another exciting story, this time about the first iron-sided ship that the Union used against the Confederacy. In Elijah of Buxton, we follow the breathtaking and heart-breaking journey of a slave as he escapes to a settlement of freed slaves in Canada.
