Oversized pillows/beanbags will be a great place for students to be able to break away from the humdrum of sitting at a conventional desk to complete work. This space will also be utilized by fast finishers, if they would like to crawl up and read a good book. Students love going to the back area to work as a group because it is cozy and comfy. I have found that many students enjoy going to the back of the room and sitting on the floor to complete class assignments because they are able to focus more, because they feel more comfortable and relaxed. It also fosters a place where students will congregate to work on assignments and the naturally just help one another. I have found peer tutoring/help to be very effective because it engages both the student that is teaching and the student that is learning. The learner feels comfortable to ask his peer a question and accept help from him and the "teacher" is also able to feel good about himself or reassure himself of the content by explaining it to someone else. I also have articles about everyday people (hanging up in the 321 area blastoff) that have overcome adversity is some way or another. So when we sometimes think that things can't get any worse, and we read about someone who was in a much more precarious situation than we are, we tend to feel better about ourselves and realize that IT can always be worse.
