  • Life and Study Skills for English Language Learners

    Funded Mar 30, 2023

Thank you so much for choosing to spend some of your hard-earned money to help support teachers and students.

My particular students are very curious about future career options and trades and what skills they need to develop to get into their preferred careers.

These books will help build up our classroom library of books supporting shaping future goals and provide multicultural reading options as we study fiction and folk tales.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Kowalski

  • Help Us Share Our Ideas and Inspire Others-Projector Needed

    Funded May 3, 2011

Thank you all so much for donating to our projector project. We were very happy to have the project fully funded. Unfortunately, we did not receive the projector until close to the end of the year, when schedules start changing at our school due to a myriad of testing requirement and fewer regular classes are held. However, we did have time to enjoy using the projector for one class project and for integrating multimedia into my classroom.

The student project we did in sociology class involved students researching several aspects of a country assigned (top headline makers and "hot spots" were assigned). They had to find out basic facts about the country including population, climate, main religion(s), ethnicity, GNP, goods exported, environmental issues, political issues, and many other facts. In researching the country, students were asked to keep in mind the question, "Would this country be an appropriate place for our class to take a class trip? Why or why not?" Students then used their research to create a multimedia presentation to present to the class, informing us about the country and convincing us to "travel" or "not travel" there. Some students used Powerpoint to create their presentations, while other students, at my encouragement, used the website Prezi.com to create very visually interesting projects. Projects were evaluated both on content and on visual and oral delivery, so it was vital for us to have a good working projector to deliver the presentations.

Towards the end of the year, when our regular classes were interrupted by state testing requirements and final exams schedules, two of my classes were able to enjoy use of the projector for watching content from Discovery Education. In sociology, we enjoyed a short film about the Amish subculture and American culture in general. The film sparked a great discussion in class, and even while we had low attendance due to the final exam schedule, the students were very engaged and participated very well in the heated debate that the film had sparked. Additionally, my history class chose to watch a film, "Voices from the Holocaust," in order to visually understand more about World War II. The students were glad to have a chance to sit back and learn through watching a documentary after two weeks of stressful final exams.

By funding this projector project on Donors Choose, you have not only helped students this year, but have ensured that modern, multimedia technology will be integrated in my classroom for years to come. We are all very appreciative and thank you once again for your generosity and support of tomorrow's future leaders: the students of today.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Kowalski

Huanying! Welcome to support Chicopee students as we study Chinese and make connections with a faraway land that is becoming more and more important to America and to world affairs! Chicopee is a small Massachusetts city with many impoverished students, many recent immigrants, and many hard-working students. My students work diligently to memorize Chinese characters, improve their pronunciation, and communicate in this difficult language.
