More than 95% of my 4th grade students are classified as English Language Learners. All of them are bilingual and multi-national. All are on the free or reduced lunch plan due to extreme poverty levels of their families. None of these life circumstances curbs their desire for success in school. Their adversity fuels their fire to do better each day. One of the main reasons they are here is because their parents left their homeland of Latin America and Mexico to provide a better life for their kids. Some of my students have been separated from one or both of their parents to get here. The experience is difficult. However when my 4th graders come to school, the expectation is that they will do everything they need to do to excel academically. Discipline can be a problem in our school because of the gang influence outside our school gates. The best way to avoid negative behavior is to keep them engaged with learning activities supporting each lesson.
