Each year at our school, teachers scramble to replace their broken desks with something that is not broken. Our classrooms have been subdivided. So, our spaces get smaller, yet our class sizes get bigger. Presently, I have 36 desks of various make, quality, design and age that are squeezed into a classroom that was subdivided years ago. I truly believe that collaboration and groupwork are an essential learning objective for my Modern World and American Democracy students. When it comes time for students to work together on a project, my students presently have to "make do" with a cacophony of table configurations. Sometimes, students will slip into the hallway to work on the floor there. Having simple, triangular desks that can be configured easily into easily merged groups of two, four, or six will facilitate this vital learning objective. This project is a first step toward this goal. It will replace 10 of the 36 ancient and deteriorating desks in my classroom with new, modular/triangular desks that will facilitate collaborative and groupwork activities.
