I work at a Title One school in California. Most students do not have books at home. We have students of many ethnicities and a total of 17 languages are spoken at our school. We currently have approximately 880 students which form our Kindergarten to 5th grade school. We strive to form a cohesive school environment along with a feeling of acceptance for everyone. English is the second language of many of my students and I find that listening to books on CDs, helps them, not only to improve their reading skills, but their language acquisition skills as well. Listening to a fluent reader who reads with expression assists these students to become better readers.
