The students that make up my classroom are considered "high risk." This means that a majority of them have been expelled/dropped out from previous high schools; are parents (or caring for younger siblings); are financially independent; are working more than 30 hours per week; and/or are overage and under-credit. I teach the night high school program, which means that many of my students are coming to school after working all day or caring for children or siblings. Despite all the barriers that are set against them, my students surprise me every day with their strength and ability to overcome challenges that might make an adult give up. The school in which my classroom is located is fantastic. Students--not standardized tests--are the main focus of both teachers and administration alike, making it an ideal place for students who have not found academic success in a traditional high school.
