  • Keeping Clean in Kindergarten

    Funded Oct 24, 2022

Thank you for the cleaning supplies! When I initially created this request, I selfishly thought how wonderful it would be for me to use these cleaning supplies in my classroom. I cannot even begin to describe the impact this is having on my kindergarten students. They beg to vacuum, mop, and wipe down their tables. Our end of day routine that I started to leave our classroom cleaner than we found it has blossomed. My students are so responsible now that they have ownership of our room. At snack they remind friends to grab the broom and sweep up the stray snacks so that no one crushes them. They kindly offer our "tools" to other classrooms so that they can also have freshly swept, moped and vacuumed rooms. I am so thankful that my students have gained these new skills.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Davis

  • Spring Reads

    Funded Aug 10, 2022

Thank you for helping me add more diverse books to my kindergarten classroom. I have shared these titles with my whole kindergarten team. Through this grant I have been able to provide our students with read alouds that provide windows to look through at new customs and cultures as well as mirrors that reflect their experiences.

Today my grade level team presented at a district wide symposium on the importance of diverse read alouds in the classroom. I was able to highlight this project as one way I accessed books for my students. Your contribution started a ripple outwards from my classroom, to my grade level, and even onto others within my school district. I am so grateful and appreciative.”

  • Diverse Cultures Need Diverse Books

    Funded Feb 17, 2022

The diverse books have made an impact on my class already! As I pull out each new week's books my students gather to see which chacters looks like them. They look to see if it's a holiday they celebrate. They cheer when we read books.

This week has been diverse holiday week, we are learning about Diwali, Indigenous People's day, and Dia de Los Muertos. Without the support of you and Donors Choose I wouldn't be able to have read alouds for these days. I would be scrambling to find books at my county library that may or may not be available for check out. Knowing I have books my student can hold in their hands as we learn is priceless!”

  • Illustrating the Language Arts

    Funded Apr 13, 2022

Thank you for supporting our kindergarten classroom. The kindergarten students love creating with art supplies during their purposeful play time. Students also have access to the people colored crayons , amrkers and kwik sticks during our shared reading and writer's workshop. It is wonderful to see students creating pictures that represent themselves and their families.

I see excitement when students in class realize that peach is not the only skin color we have available. Each table grouping has their own people colored set of crayons and theymuse them everytime we work on illustrating a picture. It's refershing to here them say, "I think this color looks most like me."

Thank you for giving to our classroom.”

  • Hands on Help

    Funded Mar 1, 2022

Thank you for supporting our kindergarten classroom. I was able to purchase many games, and hands on math and reading games to use within our classroom. I prepared these games over the summer so that I could use them in the classroom at the start of the school year.

The students especially love the math cup stacking. They don't even realize that they are practicing math facts, and beg to play the cup game frequently. The students also enjoy playing math games with their partners. They love using spinners, and mini erasers as counters while practicing counting, addition facts, and showing part/part/whole representations.

Thank you for supporting our kindergarten classroom!”

  • Dry Erase Table for Maximum Engagement

    Funded Mar 24, 2022

The kindergarteners are in love with the new dry erase tables and so am I! We are able to use dry erase markers to stretch out words, draw math equations, and even draw or doodle on our new tables. They are a great way to keep the students engaged in learning.

The tables do not take up as much space as our previous rectangle tables, yet they allow for more seating. This is a huge bonus since our classes for next year appear to be larger. I love the space it has opened up in the classroom to allow for more purposeful play.

I am so grateful for your kind donation that helped make these tables happen.”

  • Walking in a Literary Wonderland

    Funded Jan 19, 2022

My students love the new books we have received. Students are engaged when I read aloud the new diverse books. These books have provided new opportunities to learn about new cultures to the majority of my class. For a few students it has given their culture a starring role in our shared reading for the day. As I was reading about a holiday that is celebrated by my Indian student, she beamed with joy. She was able to help me with correct pronunciation of holiday terms and talk to her classmates about the celebration. I have never seen her so engaged and so happy. Her classmates were overjoyed to learn about her special celebration and asked questions all day about it. Their genuine support and enthusiasm for learning was exactly why I needed these books.”

My students are from many different cultures, and they speak numerous languages. We often get new students from foreign countries in the middle of the year. A large number of the students come from homes that qualify for free or reduced lunches. Despite the large number of students identified as low-income, our students are great achievers! Our school was identified nationally as a Distinguished Title One school. Our success is due to the dedicated teaching staff, parental involvement and our caring school culture.
