  • Making Museum Magic

    Funded Dec 20, 2023

Thank you for supporting our museum unit. We were able to transform our dramatic play area into three different experiences. We started with a space transformation that was elevated with the addition of space vehicles, space lego set, and glow in the dark sensory materials.

The next transformation was a Chinese restaruarant. We used chop sticks, orderd food, played with a new Chinese New Year lego set, and created panda art. Students were able to listen to the Lunar New Year books including Boys Don't Fry. The students loved learning about the Asian culture.

Our final transformation has been an archeological dig site. We are learning about fossils and dinosaurs. We have created our own fossils using model magic and plant materials from the courtyard. We used kinetic sand and paint brushes to dig for dinosaur bones in our sensory bin. We've read and reread Here We Go Dinosaur Hunting. It is a new favorite.

Thank you for expanding my students world one dramatic play area at a time!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Davis

  • Constructing Learning with Dramatic Play

    Funded Nov 8, 2023

Thank you for helping our class explore construction. We used foam bricks, wooden planks and fort builders to build a variety of structures. We built with arches, crafted bridges, and used recycled materials to create.

Our gingerbread house frame was hugely popular as students helped follow visual directions to build the frame. They then added the paper candies to decorate inside and out.

The highlight of the experience was our gingerbread house building today. Students used their construction knowledge to add walls, a roof and decorate. It was a joyous occasion!”

  • Diverse Titles for Our Diverse Class

    Funded Sep 27, 2023

My students love reading the diverse titles that you provided via this grant. Students loved celebrating Diwali. We read books, created rangoli and watched a video. In December we learned about Hanukkah by reading new books. Students we excited to be able to share about their holiday. We also read about how Christmas is celebrated differently around the world. It was heart warming to see each student aglow with the new information.

I look forward to reading about Chinese New Year, Eid and Ramadan with our class. I hope our students will be equally excited to share about their celebrations.”

  • All Sorts of Sorts

    Funded Sep 21, 2023

Preschool students have the most excitement when opening a new box. They are overjoyed to see the new materials we recieved with this project. Everyone loves to sort!

This project supported our fall and apple themes. Sorting apples by size, color, stem, or worm was new and engaging. Studnet liked counting and comparing.

The pie sort was so popular we used it for weeks as a play choice. Students were engaged in using the tongs to sort by color, type of fruit, or number of items. It was open ended and allowed students to practice what they needed.

The new reading materials were also a class favorite. Everyone loves to hear a new story. We used the new books to expand our learning.”

  • Books for Our Alphabet Countdown

    Funded Apr 8, 2023

Thank you for supporting our alphabet countdown. Kindergarten was able to make special memories of the last 26 days of school together. We read brand new books, created art, and ate yummy snacks!

I am especially grateful that I was able to share the books, materials, and ideas with my amazing kindergatern teammates. This project impacted all Ravenwood kindergarteners! With your kindness and support, all future students will also have access to these stories and lessons. I know this year's students will love our new books too!”

  • Fine Motor Fun for Kinder

    Funded May 23, 2023

The fine motor supplies you have helped fund have already made an impact on the jump start preschool students. We have utilized the play doh once a week to strengthen fingers. We play at the water table and light tables with the new manipulatives.

Our name writing practice has become less challenging, due to our increased fine motor control. The daily use of play doh, fun foam, tweezers, and scissors has greatly increased our hand strength.

Your donation will continue to impact future students as well. This is especially helpful as students come to school with less and less fine motor skills.”

  • Rainbow Rug for Read Alouds

    Funded Jun 30, 2023

The rainbow rug arrived! I am excited to set up my classroom with the rug anchoring our meeting space. There are twenty four spots on the rug, spaced out so that all can see.

I cannot wait to have calendar time, sing songs, and read books here. I think the arc of the rainbow allows students to be closer to the action yet still give them appropriate space for themselves.

I am happy to have the rug in place for our school's Back to School night. I will be able to show off our classroom, meet student and parents, and make everyone feel welcome. The rug really pulls it all together!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Davis

  • Let's Read It Again

    Funded Jan 10, 2023

Thank you for supporting my kindergarten classroom. My diverse classroom was thrilled to receive a variety of books celebrating cultures and customs throughout the world. We were excited to read about Eid and have our classmates share sweet treats.

We enjoyed reading about the gardner of Alcatraz. My students were fascinated that he was "real". They love having biographies read to them. I appreciate the ability to select these wonderful books to share with them.

I love the connections my students make when we are reading together. The story my brother is away, helped another child feel that they weren't the only one dealing with a family member being incarcerated.

Thank you for supporting this classroom.”

  • Writer's Workshop Basics

    Funded Nov 4, 2022

Thank you for your support of our writer's workshop project. Students had a wonderful time personalizing their journal. They write each day inside. They may write about anything they choose. Their stories are becoming more detailed and their illustrations are fantastic.

The writer's workshop project also provided colored ink so that we could have mini student books printed in color. The students have gone WILD with excitement! They are thrilled to have their own little books printed in color. Thank you for making their year so much more memorable!”

  • Art Supplies for Purposeful Play

    Funded Oct 26, 2022

Thank you for the model magic, astro brights paper, and origami paper. The kindergarten students have loved the added materials in our art space. During the gingerbread unit students created their own gingerbread men with model magic. They then colored them with markers and added details to personalize their gingerbread man. The astro brights paper makes every craft just a little bit more wonderful. The paper is bright and doesn't fade. We will be using it to make our own interpretations of Dr. Martin Luther King in the upcoming week. We will be using our origami paper during Lunar New Year. We have several opportunities to fold the paper into new creations. I am excited that I don't have to precisely cut copy paper into exact squares!

I am so appreciative of the way Donor's Choose has allowed me to teach the students with hands on activities. Without you I could teach, but it wouldn't be as colorful.”

My students are from many different cultures, and they speak numerous languages. We often get new students from foreign countries in the middle of the year. A large number of the students come from homes that qualify for free or reduced lunches. Despite the large number of students identified as low-income, our students are great achievers! Our school was identified nationally as a Distinguished Title One school. Our success is due to the dedicated teaching staff, parental involvement and our caring school culture.
