It is my goal as a classroom teacher to provide not only differentiated instruction, but also ways for students to differentiate their learning environment. For years, students have been asked to sit in desks and often times those desks have been placed in rows, forcing students to conform to the classroom's environment. This is not always the ideal learning situation for all students. My goal is to provide flexible seating arrangements for my students. We will work together to decide, which learning environment is best for each student. By providing the students with different choices of areas and mediums in which to work, each student should be able to determine which learning environment works best for them. By being able to provide beanbag chairs, yoga balls, standing desks, and movable furniture the students will be able to use and decide for themselves which type of learning medium works to their advantage. No longer will every student have to accommodate to desks and tables. If a bean bag chair works best for them, than they should be allowed to use that learning medium. Learning should be a personal endeavor and by allowing students a choice in where and how they work, built on an understanding of why that environment is best for them, students should be able to flourish!
