Currently, our desks are health hazards, and I am building up some alternative options. The cracks in the chairs pinch and cut skin. The bolts in the chair backs tear clothing and trap long hair, pulling it out. The desk tops often detach and fall. What teenager can focus on learning when they are uncomfortable or in pain from broken desks and chairs? I can't even get through an entire staff meeting in one of our current desks, so I can't imagine what 8 hours in them is like. I can't tell you how many times we've been deep in a great Socratic seminar or other dialogue only to have a major disruption when a desk comes to its final tragic end. When a group of students is grappling with how to not only articulate their proposed solution to the immigration or opioid crisis in our community, but how to communicate that solution to legislators in their own unique voices, they shouldn't have to worry about the structural integrity of their desks. I bought tables with my own money, and am now working on getting seating to go with the tables. These exercise balls have a 5 year warranty, and will give options to 1/3 of my students, at least, as I work on replacing more desks and chairs. No more pinched skin or pulled out hair.
