Hokki Stools for Wiggly Scholars
Funded Oct 24, 2016The arrival of our new stools has been met with great excitement! Students carried them through the courtyard, and by the time they arrived at their classroom's door, we had a parade of students eager to try them out. The verdict was instant! These stools are so much more comfortable than the ones we had to return. Students can't wait to get more of them, and look forward to the chance to learn while wiggling around. For our high energy, and ADHD students, stools like these help them get out energy while engaging in classroom learning. Thanks so much for your support!”

Ping Pong at Lunch Makes us Sweat
Funded Sep 2, 2016We rolled out our first ping pong table this week at lunch, and you should have seen the excitement on our students' faces! This table was one of the items they voted on that would make lunch more fun. It was the first rainy lunch of the year. Fortunately, our parent volunteer crew had stayed late the night before (3 hours!) to build the first table. The roll-out was a huge hit. Students immediately started gathering around and asking what the rules could be. After some negotiation, they had a rotation set, rules decided, and the movement began! No longer sitting around the lunch tables, our students got MOVING -- and therefore ready for some rigorous learning for the rest of the day. Thank you for your support in helping to make their idea for lunch time fun become a reality!”

Funded Sep 21, 2016Reading at Impact Academy happens throughout the day. It's serious business! Currently, our focus on reading comes through the form of two online reading programs which provide students the opportunity to build their reading skills of informational texts through guided reading lessons, vocabulary tutorials, and speed reading games. In addition, every student can access an online library of high interest books, articles, and magazines. But there is still something to be said for holding a real book in your hands. And we've heard it loud and clear from our students: they can't wait to read these new books in our classroom library during our L2R (Live/Love to Read) period -- where students read silently and then have the chance to share what they're reading in book talks. Thank you so much for helping reading come alive in so many ways for our students! Kids who are confident and engaged readers can become successful college students and efficacious citizens. You're sending them on their path towards success!”

Help Us Get Moving at Lunch!
Funded Sep 1, 2016Our lunch time activities are now in full swing, thanks to your support! We've got a student lead ball shed that currently has basketballs, soccer balls, cones, and volleyballs that students can check out. Two of our student leaders open up the ball shed each day at the start of lunch, get their binder ready, and line up their peers. Our teachers on duty roll out the basketball hoop, and students take to the fields and courts. It has really changed the entire feeling of lunch! Now students can play in a variety of different games instead of all competing over 1 solitary soccer ball. Next step: paint the ball court so we can get four-square going!”

Funded Aug 10, 2016Thank you so much for your support of our yoga mat project! You should see the students in action in our brand new physical activities room. Before the mats arrived, students were sitting on the rug or linoleum, trying to do their warm up stretching routine and yoga. Now, the music is playing, the yoga mats are organized neatly in rows throughout the room, and students are happily getting ready for the day's physical activities!
Each mat is carefully rolled up at the end of the routine and kept neatly in a yoga closet, where the next class comes in and has an entire process for obtaining their mats and getting set up.
Although you can't see it all in person, I hope the photos demonstrate just how happy our students are with this new equipment. Thanks so much!”

Funded May 19, 2016I'm happy to announce that your combined contributions mean our students and families will have access to a functioning kitchen to make healthy breakfasts, snacks, and meals a possibility for us next year! We'll receive the oven and stove in August, get it hooked up, and start cooking as soon as possible. Stay tuned for picture in October!”

Sports Equipment to Keep Our Student Athletes Winning!
Funded Dec 30, 2015This was a great year for our athletics department! You made our coaches' dreams with the mountains of new gear that arrived to help with the strengthening and conditioning of their scholar athletes. All of our teams went to the semifinals or finals this year, including a championship for our Cross Country team!
We had fewer injuries and better records because our athletes all had equal access to equipment. Without a gym or a weight room at our school, only the students who can afford gym memberships typically are able to get the strengthening and conditioning a high school athlete receives. Your donation made it possible for ALL of our students to achieve their potential!
So, what's next? The growth of our athletics department to include two new sports in our new 7th grade! We couldn't do it without you. Thanks so much.”

Funded Nov 6, 2015Thank you for donating to our school and this project earlier this year! We have had the Mp3 players in use for the past two months! One of our students took on the task of setting up all the tech as part of his Workplace Learning Internship here at school. He worked with our Technology Coordinator, learning how to create barcodes and scan each device into our system so we can keep track of the technology. Since then, the devices have made their way into our Learning Center and classrooms, where students are finding it easier to concentrate while listening to pre-approved playlists. Our teachers are thrilled that students can earn this as an incentive to help them get their work done! Finally, as we gear up for our portfolio defense season, when students prepare and give 90 minute presentations about their academic work and how they have grown, I can't wait to see the devices take on a new life as students record their presentations and listen to themselves to make revisions to their presentation with the help of peers. As always, your support of my school and students in need is inspiring. Thank you so much on behalf of my students and teachers!”

Help My Seniors Apply to College!
Funded Jun 26, 2015In the past month, our seniors have been amping up their college application process! Our college counselor has been visiting students in their senior classes to get 100% of our seniors signed up for the UC and CSU portals to make sure they are ready to submit their applications on time. Last year 76% of our seniors were accepted to a 4-year college, and we're hoping it goes even higher this year. It's all about follow up and 1-on-1 help students get from our college counselor. I wish you could have seen the looks on students' faces when they saw the new computer all set up and ready to go! It's beautiful!! A huge screen with lighting-fast processing times allows students to quickly and clearly complete their applications. It's like a whole new world in comparison to the old "Frankenstein" style computers on the other table in the office. We couldn't have done it without your help, so on behalf of all of our seniors, thank you!!”

Help us get our new Chromebooks up and running!
Funded May 4, 2015With your support, every single math class at our school will have a dedicated lab! In addition, we are nearing our goal of 1-1 computer access for our students. This has been paid for almost exclusively through donors like you.
Our Chromebooks are now lined up, ready to be started up with their new licenses. Thank you so much for helping to make our 42 new Chromebooks, paid for through the LearnStorm prize, actually functional for our students!
Because of your involvement and financial contribution, the teachers and students at my school will have the tools to succeed on the path to college.”

Mr. Key
