My students will get hands-on knowledge on how a basic pillow is made. Through cutting and dying their own fabric, we will discuss math skills such as how to account for seam allowance and discussing ratios related to dye mixing. We will explore literature surrounding the historical and cultural significance of embroidery in the United States and beyond. The process of dying their own fabric will allow then to witness, first-hand, the way that colors and chemistry affect the environment around them. They will also get a chance to explore the geometric power of the physical effects they instilled on their fabric when dying. However, what I believe to be the absolute most important part of this lesson will be that these students from broken and poor homes will be able to take something special home from school that they can truly cherish and leave with confidence that they made it with their own hands. How your contributions will be used: Each yard of muslin will be cut out to be the front and back of pillows for 3 students. There are enough rotary cutters listed to allow each table in my classroom to have two rotary cutters for the 5-6 students at each table to share. The students will then be able to tie-dye the backs of their pillows using the tie-dye classroom kits. The front of their pillows will be an opportunity for them to experience embroidery using the embroidery hoops. There are enough embroidery hoops for one entire grade level, the grade levels will be staggering the embroidery portion, in order to let every student have the opportunity to design and complete their own embroidery design for the front of their pillows. The students will then use the teacher's personal sewing machine to assemble their pillows.
