Our Sweet Home - a Celebration of Dirt!
Funded Feb 20, 2019Thank you so much for helping provide the materials we needed that you helped purchase for the Sweet Home Geneva County- A Celebration of Dirt event! We used the materials as we reinforced what the students were learning as we taught them about the importance of the layers of the soil. The event was a huge success and I truly believe that all the 4th graders in our county left the event with an understanding of how important the soil is to us. They also learned about the importance of crop production and some history from our great state of Alabama.
We used the materials you helped purchase in many ways. We had 10 stations that were either soil related or aspects of Alabama History. There were around 200 fourth grade students present from all three schools in our county at this event. We had presenters/ farmers from our local county extension office present and teach the stations to the students.
When they entered the building, we gave the students a bag that was full of fun information about soil, pencils, stickers, and a clipboard that was provided from your generous gift. The students used the clipboard to write on as we were not in the classroom and didn't have a hard surface to write on. We used the paper you helped purchase at the soil foldable station. The Soil Horizons Biorama was an amazing visual for the students to get a glimpse of the soil beneath our feet as they created the soil foldable. We also used the paper at the Painting with soil station. The pencils, paint, and paint brushes accommodated classes of 20 at a time.
We used the clear cups with lids to make a mini version of the layers of the soil for the students to take home. We had Alabama Forestry workers come and present this station. They even brought us Pine Seedlings for all the students to take home and plant!
We also had the "favorite" Edible Soil station where the students used cereal (bedrock) chocolate candy rocks (rocks), chocolate pudding (sub soil) and crushed Oreo cookies (top soil). We had green colored coconut flakes and green sprinkles as the plant life and a yummy gummy worm on top to top off this fun educational dessert! The students put the contents of the activity in the clear cups you helped provide.
The materials you helped provide made a difference because it gave the students a more hands on approach to learning. The students learned to use all their senses learning about dirt. They truly left the event with a deep understanding of how important soil is and that dirt is just not DIRT. We are so very thankful for your generous gift!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Coker
