  • A 21st Century Classroom for Individualized and Cooperative Learning

    Funded Jun 4, 2019

My classes and I are enjoying our new furniture! Students who were working on a small group project about propaganda in advertising used the extra table space to dive into their ideas. Adult-sized students are very happy sitting in the chairs that allow for more space and comfort.

When the materials first arrived, my classes were taking care of beginning of the year necessities: checking out textbooks, collecting computer log in information, etc. As most of us did these things, five of my students took on the responsibility of assembling the new furniture. They completed the task in about 25 minutes! They were proud that they helped and that they were successful. After assembly, the new furniture became the coveted places to sit.

As the school year advances, my students and I plan to enjoy the comfort in our classroom as we explore competency-based education (CBE) in our school. CBE allows students to work independently at times, which will be enhanced by our new classroom furniture. Thank you so much for your contributions!”

    With gratitude,

  • Modern Scholars in Search of Shakespeare

    Funded Dec 2, 2010

I am so happy to thank each of you for your contribution to my English classroom at Charleston High School! With your help, a huge impact on student learning has been made!

The graphic novel versions of Macbeth that we were able to purchase with your generous donations have made learning a little more fun for a group of high school seniors. Not only have these students benefited, but the seniors in my future classes will as well.

With these books, my students have been more engaged and active while reading Shakespeare. They have finally realized that the words are not dead on the page and that Shakespeare's writing can tell a story that is ageless and timeless.

Thank you so much for your generosity. You truly have made a difference in many lives!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kelly Rice

Students are reading "good" literature less and less often these days. Unfortunately, budget cuts have made it impossible for my senior English students to have new textbooks in more than 30 years. Our current book contains Shakespeare's Macbeth, but its worn-out, out-dated appearance is rather off-putting.
