I service students in a mild/moderate self-contained classroom setting that meets the individual needs of special education students ranging from second through fifth grade. I teach at a Title 1 elementary school in a rural area that services an impoverished community with 74% of our school students receiving free/reduced lunch. My group of students are significantly below grade level in both English Language Arts and Mathematics. I have four students who are unable to recognize letters, letter sounds, and numbers. I have four students that can recognize letters and letter sounds but cannot blend sounds together to make words. I have three students that can read on grade level but their comprehension level is significantly below grade level. Even with the academic challenges that my students face, they come to school everyday eager to learn with smiles of their faces.
