  • Build and Code With LEGO WeDo 2.0

    Funded Jan 9, 2020

Thank you so much for your generosity! My students with special needs learn best with hands-on, engaging activities and the LEGO WeDo 2.0 will let my students interact with LEGO bricks that they already love and software to create projects. These kits will let my kiddos use engineering and computational thinking to create dynamic projects! Thank you for making this possible.”

  • Special Technology Tools for Special Students!

    Funded Aug 13, 2019

My students were so excited to receive the Samsung tablets, Chromebook and headphones! They were happy to finally have headphones they can use as they go over their ears and work for students with sensory challenges. Since the Samsung tables have touchscreen capability, they are a perfect device that my learners can use regardless of their current learning needs and their physical capabilities. The addition of these three devices and headphones now provide technology tools to support all of my students.

In our special day classroom, all of my learners look forward to using the headphones with the Chromebook, Samsung tablets, and Surface 'Go' while using learning apps we use in our classroom including Prodigy, KidBlog, Amplify, Raz Kids, DreamBox, Clever, and Kodable to provide differentiated instruction at their learning level and to tap into their interests. As you can see in a couple photos, my students support each other and work on collaborative projects which is what they will need to be able to do in in their future careers. This is especially challenging for most of my students and it is important they begin learning to do this now. All of these devices also support my students with speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and predictive writing features.

I couldn't be more appreciative of the Donor's Choose contributors for funding this project! It has really made a significant impact on my students needs as they participate in their learning each day.”

  • Technology Provides a Surface for Project-Based Learning!

    Funded Feb 28, 2019

My students were so excited when we opened the box! We plugged it in right away and I showed them how to use it. Since the Surface Go has touchscreen capability and is a computer, we now a device that my learners can use regardless of their current learning need and their physical capabilities. The Surface Go is the perfect device for all of my students.

All my learners look forward to using the 'Go' with the learning apps we use at our school including Raz Kids, DreamBox, and Clever. In our special day classroom, I also use Prodigy, KidBlog, Scratch and Kodable to tap into my students interests as well as prepare them for the careers they will enjoy as adults. My scholars have so much to share and the 'Go' lets them use the speech-to-text feature to do this in their writing, Blogging, and apps including ClassDojo. And they are also learning to share with their friends as they take turns using the 'Go' throughout the day.

  • Wiggle While We Work!

    Funded Aug 26, 2017

My students are using the wiggle stools all day from breakfast to reading, writing, math and science. They help my students stay focused longer, they are more engaged during academic activities as they wiggle back and forth while they learn and work.

They were so excited when we opened the boxes! They couldn't wait to sit and take them for a spin. All my learners look forward to sitting on their stool during academic instruction, they get movement and sensory stimulation while they learn and work. And they are also learning to share with their friends as they take turns using the stools throughout the day. The wiggle stools have made it possible for my most active students to stay engaged for longer periods of time. I love them so much I got one for myself, so we can all wiggle while we work!

We have all found the stools to be so effective in providing the stimulation my students need to stay seated during instructional time. The next step was to get enough wiggle stools for the whole class which we have already achieved thanks to our school PTO! They funded another four stools after they saw how effective they are for engaging my learners and I couldn't be more appreciative of Donor's Choose contributors for funding this project! It has really made a significant impact on my students needs as they participate in their learning each day.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Komatinsky

The "wiggle stools" will provide the stimulation necessary to allow my students to remain seated for longer periods of time and allow them to make better use of instructional time. These materials will not directly teach my students new skills, but they will help my students learn in all content areas. Instead of having to take a break from working in order to get movement and sensory stimulation they will be able to do both simultaneously! The donations for this project will improve my classroom by allowing students to stay seated and on task for longer periods of time and will reduce the number of interruptions to instructional activities throughout the school day. In addition, the dynamic seating will allow the students to strengthen their core muscles, and it is well documented that low muscle tone is often present in children with autism. I'm looking forward to seeing my students "wiggle while they work" and able to attend to classroom activities for longer periods of time.
