Let the Learning Games Begin!
Funded Aug 23, 2014Thank you for your generous support. Your donation made it possible for me to purchase a collection of language games. These games help students build their proficiency in the conventions of English while engaging in some motivating and friendly competition! The students LOVE each of the games and look forward to 'Fun Fridays,' when they have the opportunity to collaborate and play to refine their understanding of English idioms, various tenses, and vocabulary. These games are an especially useful resource that enables students to practice language concepts they have encountered in previous lessons but with which they need continued exposure. 'Fun Fridays' and language-based gaming has also improved students' abilities to work collaboratively in groups. Thanks so much for helping to make this possible!”

Funded Aug 22, 2014Thank you so much for you generous support. Thanks to your generosity, students in my class have consistent access to a suite of online learning resources and tools. On any given day students read independently on raz-kids.com, study vocabulary on spellingcity.com, or explore our class websites. Each day during our lunch period I host a Lunch Lab, where students are invited to use the computers to study, research, or read. Each day between six to eight students visit my class to do some extra lunchtime reading. During regularly scheduled class time, students are using the Chromebooks to carry out animal research projects and to build bilingual glossaries as a part of their project portfolios.
Of course, students do not just use the Chromebooks and earphones--they also care for them. Each week an eager volunteer serves as my "Tech Monitor" and is responsible for not only distributing and collecting the Chromebooks and earphones but who also serves as Tech support for any students who are struggling with the WIFI, accessing a site, and so on. That is to say, they are developing multiple digital literacies. None of this would be possible without your generous support.”

Global Citizens~We Need Bilingual Books!!!
Funded Feb 21, 2014Thank you again for your generous support. Students at P.S. 97 were thrilled to receive bilingual story books. Emerging bilinguals who arrived at our school from their home countries less than a month ago, and who are working hard to learn English, especially enjoyed participating in the international read aloud. All students enjoyed hearing stories in multiple languages. Many were surprised to hear their peers who are typically quiet read with fluency and confidence in their native language. Those who are fluent in English got a bit of a sense of the challenge their peers who are learning English face as they are surrounded all day by a language that is still very new to them. Of course, we all enjoyed one student's spontaneous performance of Monkey King's actions while his classmate read the tale.
Your gift has enabled me to begin a multilingual classroom library. Every day my students dip into this collection of books and learn. Thank you.”
With gratitude,
Ms. J.
