Racial equity is of great importance to my school, my division, and, most of all, to myself. I feel that it is important to also teach students the importance of racial equity. I believe that reading rich, thought-provoking literature is one of the most powerful ways to achieve this. I want students to be able to realize the part they play in achieving racial equity by understanding and disrupting racism and racist thought. In order to achieve this goal, I realize that I need to provide quality books that will allow for this thinking and understanding to take place. Providing my students with powerful, engaging literature will allow for this thinking and learning to take place. Being able to add the book selections for this project to my classroom library will allow my students to read in lit circles or book clubs (reading groups) where they can talk about what the book they have read with other students and share their new understandings. I believe the books I have chosen will not only engage my students as readers but will help them become better, more engaged citizens. I also believe that once students have talked about their individual books, they will be inspired to read more. As a teacher, that excitement and drive to read to learn more is key to student success.
