We begin each day with a morning meeting. Students love to discuss the current events they hear about and past news stories. Many times, they have asked me to look up certain information on the smart board. My students have minds of their own with their own opinions that they don't mind sharing with others! We take classroom polls after reading about certain topics. For example we had discussions about the death of the gorilla, Harambe, and the replacing of snow days with online classes. Afterwards, we would take a class vote. This would sometimes lead to debates. "Time for Kids" will make available many more news articles and I don't have to pre-read to make sure they are appropriate, because they are written with the fourth grade student in mind. Another great feature is the online magazine where the students can open, read and answer questions about an article on the computer. I can make this a classroom station. There are many great uses for this magazine and my kids would benefit greatly from having it.
