Studies show flexible seating options help to reduce stress, encourage learning and create a positive environment where students want to be actively engaged! Flexible seating for my 34 students will contribute to their success! My goal is to offer comfortable, yet structured seating options to allow my students to work in the position they are most successful in. Think about how you might work at home. Do you prefer to sit at a desk? Do you gravitate to your sofa with a laptop? Do you prefer to lounge on the floor or your bed? Would you be most comfortable standing? Or maybe you just want a little extra cushion to make sitting in a chair more comfortable. My students are no different! Traditional school furniture is uncomfortable, uninviting and can be downright painful. Offering my students the option to choose where or how they sit to learn or complete their work not only lets them find the most comfortable position for them (instead of me dictating what should be comfortable for them!) it also gives them an opportunity to exercise free choice - something they don't get very often in the classroom. Wobble chairs, pillows, stools, floor desks, and clipboards will offer my students a wide variety of options to fit their preferences and needs while also allowing for customization and structure. As a bonus, if they aren't having to think about how much their legs hurt or how hard it is to sit still in that awful chair, they are more focused on what we are learning and better able to maintain control. Improved learning, student success, and comfort all because of a few pillows and stools? That sounds like an easy yes in my book!
