I currently teach fifth graders at the California School for the Deaf, Fremont. Some fourth graders join us for our bilingual language arts and math classes. My students are bright, inquisitive, empathetic, and the future leaders of the Deaf community. The students are bilingual learners, who are educated using their first language (ASL) to understand concepts, learn subject matter, develop critical thinking skills, and articulate their thoughts and learning. They are becoming fluent in English primarily through literacy activities - reading and learning through a variety of texts and articulating their thoughts and learning in written English. STEAM activities and social justice learning are two key aspects of our classroom. My goal is for students to embrace their individual identities, celebrate and learn about others' experiences, and learn how to use technology and critical thinking to shape their world.
