  • Flashlight Friday! Let’s Do This!

    Funded Aug 27, 2018

My students and I are so grateful for your donation! We have been using our mini flashlights (and batteries, of course!) while reading our guided reading books independently each Friday. My students love this fun incentive and look forward to it each week. The students have also been displaying great classroom citizenship throughout the week so that they can be eligible to sit in the "VIP" Bean Bag chair you also donated. Last Friday, we had so many eligible good citizens that I had to set a timer and every 8 minutes, a different student had an opportunity to read with their flashlight while sitting in the "VIP" Bean Bag Chair.

When the materials arrived to our classroom the students could not contain their excitement. I explained to them that every Friday we would be participating in an activity called "Flashlight Friday". They were going to be able to use mini flashlights as a reading tracker. They could not wait they were so happy. One student kept asking "Is it Friday yet?".

Thank you so much for bringing such joy into our classroom. My students look forward to using the new supplies each week and I love having these meaningful experiences with them in the process.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Peterson

  • Everything We Need "Write" at Our Fingertips!

    Funded Mar 16, 2015

Thank you all so much for funding our project! As you can see from the pictures I have submitted my students were beyond excited to receive these gifts. Seeing their faces light up with anticipation of what was going to be in each box was absolutely wonderful.

My students have already begun to utilize these fantastic materials. We have started a spring art project & the construction paper and crayons that we received are just what we needed in order to make this project a success! In my project proposal I was sure to order enough boxes of crayons to ensure that each one of my students was able to have their very own box. This may sound like something small - a box of crayons, but to my students having something that they could call their own was very valuable to them!

As a teacher of students with special needs I have a lot of "hats" to wear throughout our school day. My responsibility as an educator is to expose my students to new concepts & information that will make them into young adults who will ultimately be productive members of society. Having the appropriate supplies such as paper, crayons, reading trackers and writing tools makes my job that much easier to do. Thank you for you help. It is truly appreciated!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Peterson

  • Comfy & Cozy in Our New Reading Corner!

    Funded Dec 17, 2014

When I told my class our project was funded and we were going to receive a new reading carpet and new comfy pillows, they were so excited. One student even said "Thank goodness, Mrs. Peterson because this rug that we have is so old". The carpet that they were referring to was actually an old carpet that was in the living room of a friend. My friend no longer wanted the carpet and I asked her if I could have it because my classroom was in desperate need of one. That was 5 years ago! So upon arrival of our new reading carpet, the students were very impressed!

The new carpet is colorful and very soft. My students love to sit on the new reading carpet and snuggle up to a pillow while reading. They also use the new pillows as a shelf in their laps to lean their books on while they are reading independently or with a partner.

Having these new additions to my classroom has made teaching reading a delight! My students are excited to utilize their new reading space and as a teacher I am thrilled that they are happy to engage in my lessons! Thank you very much for supporting our project. It is truly appreciated!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Peterson

  • Shhhhh...We're Learning and Playing at the Same Time!

    Funded Dec 2, 2014

Words can not express how thankful we are that you cared enough to help fund our project. As we were opening the packages that were delivered, the faces of the children were absolutely priceless. It was like Christmas morning in Class 312! The children were so excited to see what was in each box.

In our class this year, math is our favorite subject. I paid close attention to what math materials I choose for my project. As a result of your funding, we are now able to engage in math games such as Multiplication Bingo to sharpen our skills. The children love to play this game!

As a teacher of children with special needs, I am always looking for ways to spark the interest of my young students. When we play games and learn at the same time, it takes the pressure off the children and they really open their minds to new concepts. Thank you for funding our project! It is truly appreciated!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Peterson

  • With the Right Supplies - You'll be Giving us Wings to Fly!

    Funded Dec 19, 2011

Words cannot express how thankful I am for receiving all of these much needed art supplies! As soon as we opened the boxes that were delivered we put the supplies to use immediately! My students were so excited and could not wait to participate in activities that I had planned for them.

After explaining to the students that generous people had donated these wonderful supplies to us, they were speechless. One student actually said, "They chose us? That's so exciting!". These students come from a "forgotten" neighborhood and to hear that generous donors took time out of their busy lives to think about them really touched their hearts.

We have been able to complete holiday crafts, literacy crafts and projects and even everyday math crafts. When my students are able to participate in hands-on projects, they succeed with the highest achievements possible!

Thank you again for your generosity! It is truly appreciated! ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Peterson

  • Chicka Chicka Boom Boom - We Have A New Classroom!

    Funded Aug 22, 2011

Words can not describe how thankful I am for your generous contributions toward my project. My students now have beautiful bean bag chairs and oversized pillows to sit on while participating in various reading activities. They are able to utilize these gifts every day and I can tell by looking at their smiling faces that they are truly enjoying themselves.

As a result of having these resources in our classroom, I am proud to say that every single child in my class has made progress in the area of reading! They are relaxed and comfortable while reading and their everyday worries seem to just melt away.

Without donors like you, my students would not have been able to progress as much as they have so early in the school year. On behalf of myself and my students, I thank you from the bottom of my heart! ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Peterson

My class is made up of 12 special needs learners. They are in the 2nd & 3rd grade and their ages range from 7-10 years old. The disabilities that they cope with include learning disabilities, speech & language impairments, autism, and emotional disturbances. Our school is a public elementary school in New York City. The neighborhood is rich in culture and diversity, but poor in crime and violence. It is important that when they come to school they feel safe and secure. My students deserve a classroom that feels like they don't have a care in the world. Their only tasks - right then & right there - is to enjoy the book that they have open in front of them.
