When we give our district's well-being survey each year, “Stress & Anxiety" are the number one concerns at our urban middle school. Students at the middle school level are going through family issues, peer pressure, and everything that the teen years bring with it. Students have to fear being at school for reasons no one would have predicted twenty years ago. This year, I made a conscious decision to recreate the environment of my classroom. As a Language & Literature teacher, I know that the setting of the story is what moves the plot. So, it was my intention to create a setting that would move our classroom story in a good direction. A space where students could feel free to listen, speak, read, and write in peace with themselves and the environment and to leave stress and anxiety at the door. At the start of the year, I removed 12 desks and chairs and replaced them with flexible seating and plants. I took out my teacher's desk and now teach with my iPad through an Apple TV. I want the setting of my classroom to drive a story plot where students feel safe to take risks, explore, create, learn, and share their knowledge with each other and the world. A place where we can all come together to bring out the best in each other, for each other.
